Scholarship Description
The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships specifically target highly-qualified international students from developing countries (the categories of countries are listed below).

The scholarships are intended for full time master’s level study in many courses at any of the Swedish Universities. In the past, few scholarships were reserved for studies at Bachelor’s level.

Eligibility
The scholarships are only intended for students who are required to pay tuition fees according to the information at University Admissions.

There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

A scholarship CANNOT BE GRANTED for a student who:
  • Has already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
  • Has a Swedish or EU/EES-citizenship, permanent residence permit or work permit in Sweden. (Not applicable for Syrian citizens.)
  • Has previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for master’s level studies or research at a Swedish university/university college.
  • Already holds a degree from a Swedish university/university college.
  • Is currently enrolled in a study programme at a Swedish university/university college.
Selection criteria:
The Swedish Institute is looking for applicants who display both intellectual ability and leadership potential and welcome applications regardless of age, gender and religious beliefs. The scholarship programme aims for diversity amongst the scholarship holders.

Due to the large number of applications, applicants from countries with a high number of applicants per seat will be evaluated most thoroughly by selecting the best applications to a second evaluation round.

Eligible groups
The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.

Category 1:
Candidates with citizenship from the following 11 countries can only apply within this category (note that this is the 2013 list, current list will be posted January 2, 2014 at the latest): Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Category 2:
Candidates with citizenship from majority of countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients. Citizenship priorities will be announced on January 2, 2014 – at the latest.

Please note that candidates with citizenship from Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine CANNOT APPLY to this programme, but instead are eligible to apply for other SI scholarship programmes including: the Visby Programme, the SI Scholarships for the Western Balkans, and the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme. Fields of study
About 600 different study programs at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship. Eligible programs are selected by Swedish universities and cover a wide variety of study areas.

Number of awards
Within each category above, around 60 scholarships are usually awarded every year. However, for the academic year 2014/2015 the number of available scholarships will be announced on January 2, 2014 - at the latest.

According to the instructions of the Swedish Government, no country can exceed 25% of the granted scholarships.

Sponsorship duration
The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in the autumn semester (August/September) and is granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters provided that the student's study results are satisfactory.

The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study programme period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study programme at a Swedish university.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.

Travel grants:
Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.

Insurance:
Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Method of Application
Please note that the scholarship application is separate from the application to master’s programmes at Swedish universities. You apply to your masters programme by using the national online application service Universityadmissions.se.

To apply, you MUST NOT be a Swedish nor an EU nor an EES citizen. In addition, you MUST BE a student who is required to pay tuition fees in Sweden according to the information at University Admissions (see active link above under 'Eligibility').

DEADLINES:
Make sure to complete your application to the master’s programmes that you wish to apply to before the deadline 15 January 2014. Pay your application fee to University Admissions before the fee deadline of 3 February 2014.

The Scholarship application period for the 2014/2015 session will be February 3-11, 2014.

PLEASE NOTE:
The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships is for studies in Sweden starting in an autumn semester.
