Next Gen Fellowship Program for Sub-Saharan African Countries

Scholarship Description
The program, launched in June 2011, responds to a shortage of experienced faculty in African higher education. The Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program provides fellowships to nurture the intellectual development and increase retention of early-career faculty in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The program assists fellows to develop research opportunities and skills, obtain doctoral degrees, and participate in robust research communities. Toward this end, the project features a thematic focus in order to renew basic research agendas addressing peace, security, and development topics as well as strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity on these issues.

Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, this project offers a replicable model at scale and complements foundation initiatives to develop and strengthen the next generation of African scholars.

The three fellowships are: the doctoral dissertation research fellowship, doctoral dissertation completion fellowship and doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship. Fellowship program also offers two workshops each year for fellow’s Masters research in their research publications.

Eligibility
The following apply to the different fellowships:
  1. The doctoral dissertation research fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.

  2. The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be more eligible for the US$15, 000 dissertation completion fellowship, applicants must be in the final year of writing and have completed at least one dissertation chapter.

  3. The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$3,000 dissertation proposal fellowship, applicants must be admitted to a graduate program but have yet to undertake dissertation research.
Selection Criteria:
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner.

All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.

Forty-five (45) fellowships are awarded each year

Sponsorship duration
Fellowships are offered each year. The duration of each of the doctoral fellowships are as described below under 'Scholarship benefits'

Scholarship benefits
The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship supports short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.

The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship supports a one-year leave from teaching responsibilities and a stipend up to US$15,000 to permit the completion of a dissertation that advances research on peace, security, and development topics.

The doctoral dissertation research fellowship supports 9-12 months of dissertation research costs of up to US$15,000 on a topic related to peace, security, and development.

Scholarship Description
The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to revitalize the humanities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda through fellowship competitions and meetings associated with them.

Through the activities of the African Humanities Program, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) promotes local and international cooperation among humanities scholars at all stages of career, with the aim of developing a self-sustaining continent-wide network of African humanities scholars.

The African Humanities Program is inspired by a commitment to the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, essential to progress and development. The AHP is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions yearly for the AHP.

Eligibility
Fellowship Details:
  • Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
  • Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
  • Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the Ph.D. no more than eight years ago.
  • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.

Participating Institutions
Any recognized institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.

The AHP organizes meetings in Africa in cooperation with host institutions to publicize the fellowship program and to discuss new trends in humanities research. In the past three years of the program, meetings were held at universities in:
  • Ghana (University of Ghana-Legon), 
  • Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Bayero University Kano, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria),
  • South Africa (University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg, the East London campus of Ft. Hare University, the University of the Western Cape and University of Cape Town in Cape Town),
  • Tanzania (the University of Dar es Salaam), and
  • Uganda (Makerere University in Kampala).
Fields of study
The ACLS defines the humanities as the study of human cultures, languages, and histories through the use of qualitative approaches. Among the disciplines contributing to humanities scholarship are anthropology, archaeology, history, studies of the fine and performing arts, musicology, languages and linguistics, literature studies, religious studies, and philosophy.

Scholarship benefits
Stipends are $9,000 for dissertations and $16,000 for postdoctoral work.

Fellowship awards to promising African scholars are the centerpiece of the African Humanities Program. An initiative to publish the best manuscripts produced under the terms of AHP fellowships is now being established. All fellows will be encouraged to submit their completed manuscripts to the African Humanities Series, which will be a cooperative venture between AHP and a major African university press.

Scholarship Description
Johnson & Johnson, a reputable transnational health company, offers the Management Development Institute (MDI) Scholarship Program every year.

The Management Development Institute (MDI) for Health Care Organizations is a one-week intensive program designed to enhance the leadership and management skills of program managers and leaders of sub-Saharan African organizations, governmental and non-governmental, that are devoted to delivering health care services to underserved populations.

The program has been specifically designed to assist African ministries of health in implementing their particular national health priorities.

Tuition and Scholarships:
Thirty-six participants will be selected for the program. The cost of the MDI training program is US$ 4,000 per participant. Johnson & Johnson awards scholarships to managers who have the greatest potential to positively impact the quantity and quality of services in their organization.

These scholarships cover the cost of tuition, training materials, accommodation and meals. Travel expenses, if required, will be borne by the participants. Upon completion of this training, candidates will be required to apply the knowledge and skills gained to resolve a management issue or obstacle in their organization.

In 2014, MDI will offer three identical programs - each in a different region of Africa:
  • For Eastern African leaders, the program will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: 22 - 28 June 2014
  • For Western African leaders, the program will be held in Accra, Ghana: 12 -18 October 2014
  • For Southern African leaders, the program will be held in Cape Town, South Africa: 19 - 25 October 2014
Eligibility
The Management Development Institute is designed principally for high-level managers of public sector entities in sub-Saharan Africa that are dedicated to the improvement of the health care of underserved populations in their countries.

However, places will also be reserved for leaders of NGO’s and other civil society organizations (faith-based organizations and community-based organizations) that have a similar health-related mission and that have a role in supporting initiatives and implementing health care priorities of the public sector.

MDI is seeking teams or clusters of individuals having related leadership responsibilities for implementing specific national health care programs and priorities in their country or region. In that way, the likelihood of the MDI bringing about significant impact is heightened and the program’s utility to national health systems is enhanced.

Depending on the country and sector, candidates might have the following titles:
  • Director
  • Project Manager
  • Program Manager
  • Executive director
  • Program coordinator
  • Public health coordinator
  • Regional coordinator
  • Chief Medical Officer
  • Chief nurse
  • Medical Superintendent
  • Country Coordinator
Eligible groups
Citizens of ANY country fulfilling above criteria. Nearly 800 participants from 32 African countries have graduated from this program.

Participating Institutions
Sub-Saharan African healthcare governmental and non-governmental organizations (i.e. NGOs); AND African ministries of health.

The MDI program has been designed by world-class management faculty from the UCLA Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and by leaders of the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). The MDI is delivered by instructors from UCLA , AMREF and by outstanding faculty from other African universities, including the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Fields of study
The Management Development Institute consists of eight modules focusing on specific areas of management directly relevant to national ministries of health and their implementing partners as they evaluate their mission and implement their health plans to achieve their stated priorities. Up until 2010, the MDI was focused solely on HIV/AIDS. In 2011 the program's new focus was expanded to health systems, generally, and now invites participation of those involved in implementing national health priorities in the areas of communicable diseases - of which HIV/AIDS is one - and chronic diseases, as well.

The language of instruction in all programs is English.

The major goal of the MDI is to provide ministries of health with the requisite management and leadership capacity to implement their stated national health priorities.

Representatives from public health systems along with their NGO implementing partners will learn management tools, frameworks and knowledge that will enable them to increase the quantity and quality of health services they provide along with improved access to them.

The lessons will be practical, and aimed toward successfully meeting the complex challenges faced by eastern, West and southern african health systems.

A mandatory requirement for your application to the program is a commitment to scope a community healthcare Improvement Plan during the program. In many cases, an interview will be required.
