Scholarship Description
The University of Adelaide offers a scholarship program, the Adelaide International Undergraduate Scholarships (AIUS), for commencing international students undertaking undergraduate study.

This scholarship program will enable a number of high-achieving undergraduate students to receive a scholarship to partly fund their studies at the University.

Eligibility
Scholarships in this program have the following conditions:

• Available for commencing international undergraduate students only;
• Open to citizens of any country (except Australia and New Zealand);
• Provides a waiver of 25% of the annual tuition fee for each year of the program for the full duration of the program, up to a maximum of four years;
• Up to 40 scholarships available each year;
• Available for study in any discipline except Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Oral Health and Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)

Academic Eligibility:
The selection process for the Adelaide International Undergraduate Scholarships is competitive, with academic achievement forming the main basis for scholarship selection. As a general guide, the University of Adelaide will consider applicants who have achieved an academic level which is the equivalent of a GPA of 6/7 (85%) for a scholarship.

As the aim of the scholarship program is to attract excellent applicants from a wide range of countries, factors such as country of citizenship and program of study may also be taken into consideration in some cases in the scholarship selection process.

Continuation of the scholarship into a second semester (where relevant) is subject to satisfactory progress and continued enrolment in the program of study for which the scholarship was awarded. Maintaining a C grade average is required, and satisfactory progress will be monitored.

The scholarships are non-renewable tuition fee awards of A$10,000-$20,000 paid across a maximum period of two semesters (or twelve months).

Recipients of the scholarship would be required to pay for any difference in fees for their first two semesters, fees for the remainder of their course and also Overseas Student Health Cover. These scholarships are not renewable and do not cover living costs.

The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme, the Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI), for international students undertaking postgraduate research study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

The purpose of the financial award programme is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its research effort.

A number of ASI scholarships may be available in the mid year round of scholarships yearly to outstanding international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in any academic discipline.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible applicants are required to have successfully completed at least the equivalent of an Australian First Class Honours degree (this is a four year degree with a major research project in the final year). All qualifying programs of study must be successfully completed.

Scholarships will be awarded on academic merit and research potential. Extra-curricular achievements are not considered.

International applicants must not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree or, if undertaking a Research Masters degree, not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters degree.

Conditions for ineligibility:

• International applicants who have not provided evidence of their meeting the minimum English language proficiency requirements for direct entry by the scholarship closing date, or who have completed a Pre-Enrolment English Program to meet the entry requirements for the intended program of study, are not eligible.
• Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible.
• Those undertaking research via remote candidature are ineligible.

Generally applicants who succeed in winning an ASI scholarship have completed a Masters degree including a significant research component and have several publications and relevant work and research experience.

If the award holder does not hold a subclass 574 visa then he/she is responsible for the cost of health insurance.

The scholarship does NOT cover visa application fees.

International applicants are not eligible if they have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award, unless they can establish that they were unable to apply in the previous round.

The University of Queensland (UQ) Academic Scholarship program for International, Australian and New Zealand students aims to reward the achievements of outstanding school leavers and gap year students.

If you are a high-achieving student and you are completing Year 12 in 2014 (or you completed in 2013 and you’re on a gap year) then you are encouraged to apply.

Three categories of scholarships exist -- UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships; UQ Excellence Scholarships; and UQ Merit Scholarships.

A minimum of $100,000 in scholarship funding will also be reserved for applicants who have experienced educational disadvantage in one or both of the following areas: Financial hardship or Geographic isolation.

Eligibility
Academic scholarships are open to Year 12 and gap year students who:

• are Australian Citizens or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holders; or
• are Australian Permanent Residents, New Zealand citizens or international students who are completing or have completed Years 11 and 12 in Australia;

Scholarship description
The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship at Macquarie University is a full Scholarship for Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies in Australia.

Applications for Session 1, 2015 is currently still on.

The scholarship award is available across most courses to cover a range of full international tuition fees for study on campus at North Ryde in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree.

Eligibility
Applicants must:

• Be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand
• Have met the University's academic and English requirements for the course to be considered for a scholarship (must hold a FULL OFFER of admission for North Ryde by the application deadline).
• Have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.7 out of 4.0 for Postgraduate applications and minimum requirement of an ATAR equivalent of 96 out of 100 for Undergraduate applications.

You are not eligible if:

• You are a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or hold permanent residency of Australia
• You are currently enrolled at Macquarie University for a program which is equivalent in level
• You have completed the same level or a higher level of study previously
• You are in receipt of another equivalent or major award or scholarship from Macquarie University
• You are a Study Abroad or an Exchange student coming to Macquarie University
• You are enrolled at Macquarie City Campus or SIBT
• You currently received full scholarship from Macquarie University you must wait at least one year after you complete your current degree to apply another full scholarship.

Scholarship benefits
This is a FULL scholarship award. Thus it covers the full international tuition fees for the desired undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree.

The scholarships do NOT provide financial support in the form of a living allowance, nor does it provide for the cost of visa application, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), airfares, accommodation, conferences or other costs associated with study.

Method of Application
You must complete an online course application form. Online course application will enable you to select your course and upload scanned copies of the required documents. You will receive a Macquarie University Student Number once your course application has been processed.

Also, you must complete an online MUIS application form. Applicants must indicate on the MUIS application form which scholarship they are applying for: the "Undergraduate" or the "Postgraduate" offer of the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship.

In addition, applicants must nominate two referees to complete a Referee Report and applicants must also provide a 'Statement of Purpose' of approximately one page outlining their interest in the scholarship program and indicating how the academic qualification will benefit themselves and their community.

DEADLINES:
For the two semesters, there are two deadlines: 31 September (for Session 1), and 30 April (for Session 2). The online applications for the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship for Session 2, 2014 must be submitted by 30 April 2014; and that for Session 1, 2015 must be submitted by 30 September 2014.

Generally, it is very advisable to submit your international undergraduate or postgraduate course applications before 1 April.

Macquarie University is an Australian public teaching and research university in Macquarie Park, New South Wales. Macquarie is ranked in the 201st-300th bracket and 8th-9th in Australia in the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Founded in 1964 by the New South Wales Government, it was the third university to be established in the metropolitan area of Sydney. Scholarship Description
As a doctor in training, a benefit of insuring with MIGA is the opportunity it gives you to apply for a Doctors in Training (DIT) Grant.

The DIT Grants Program provides funding to assist doctors in training whilst pursuing specialist training opportunities in Australia and abroad. Funds are provided to assist doctors meet the expenses associated with this additional training.

Eligibility
The 2013 DIT Grants Program is open to doctors in Australia who are:

• Insured with MIGA at the time of Application and funding of the Grant
• Enrolled in and undertaking an accredited training program with an Australian Medical College or Society, or who have completed their College or Society training program within the last two years
• Seeking to undertake a Training Program or Placement that is beyond the training prescribed through their College or Society.

The doctor should be undertaking the training to enhance their qualifications and/or benefit their career and local community.

Selection criteria:
Grants will be judged on merit and awarded to Applicants deemed as submitting the most outstanding Applications.

Eligible groups
A citizen of ANY country, who is in specialty training either in Australia or abroad.

Fields of study
Any specialist training in the field of medicine. Examples of eligible training opportunities:

• Post graduate study in an area relevant to the doctor's service to their local community
• Indigenous community placements
• Placements with volunteer organisations (e.g. Médecins Sans Frontières)
• Undertaking research in a specific area of medicine
• Pursuit of advanced training which is in addition to that provided within the doctor's accredited College or Society training program.

Number of awards
Four (4) individual DIT grants are awarded each year. Whether all four Grants are awarded or not will be subject to MIGA receiving suitable Applications which meet MIGA's selection criteria.

Sponsorship duration
This is a ONE-TIME grant assistance to eligible doctors

Scholarship benefits
There will be individual DIT Grants of $5,000 per recipient.

The funding is intended to assist doctors meet the costs incurred in pursuing their training opportunity. Cost may include travel, accomodation, Program fees, etc.

The Australian Awards Fellowships (formerly Australian Leadership Award, ALA, Fellowships) aim to develop leadership, address regional development priorities, and build / strengthen partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner organisations in eligible developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.

Through Australian Awards Fellowships, Australian organizations have the opportunity to build and strengthen links with organizations in developing countries by offering professional development opportunities in Australia.

Eligibility
Australian organisations must ensure that all nominated Fellows meet the following general eligibility requirements:

• Be a citizen of and residing in an eligible country (see below)
• Not hold Australian permanent resident status or be applying for permanent residency
• Have been working in their country of citizenship, employed by the organisation supporting their application and working in areas relevant to their training in Australia, prior to the date of the proposed commencement of their Fellowship

Participating Institution(s)
Any approved Australian university or higher or research institution. Australian organizations from a wide range of academic, research, business, industry, media, NGOs, professional groups and government have hosted ALA fellows in the past rounds.

Fields of study
Australian Awards Fellowship support a wide variety of areas and sectors. Australian organizations are encouraged to design programs that address priority areas, including disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.

Number of Awards
Each applying Australian organisation can request funding for a maximum of 25 Fellows.

In one round of the past now defunct ALA Fellowships program, $10.5 million was provided to 31 Australian organisations to support 55 programs involving 614 Fellows (commenced in January 2013). However, note that the number of fellowships awarded may vary.

Sponsorship duration
Fellowships must be between 10 calendar days and 12 months duration.

Scholarship benefits
Australian organisations can request funding of up to AUD35,000 per fellow, to a maximum of 25 Fellows, inclusive of operational and management costs, to fund costs associated with Fellows’ participation in the Fellowship activities and some of the costs associated with delivering Fellowship activities in Australia. A maximum of $35,000 per Fellow can include:

• Return economy airfare from/to home country’s international hub

Applications are restricted to Australian organisations demonstrating on-going linkages with counterpart overseas organisations in eligible countries (see above). Overseas counterpart organisations and individual fellows must be sponsored by an Australian organisation, and may not apply directly for a Fellowship. They may, however, initiate contact with an Australian organisation to explore the latter’s interest in applying for Fellowship funding.

Looking For A Study Destination? Australian Universities Offer Increasing African Presence

Increasing African Student Presence in Australia

From Australia, reports indicate significant increases in the number of African students studying there.

In a report entitled, "Big increase in number of Nigerian students at Australian universities", an authoritative Australian news media notes a doubling of student numbers compared with last year. Reasons for this were also advanced (see below).

Destination Australia for increasing number of African students

The increase, according to the news story, is due to many factors.

Newly crowned as Africa’s largest ­economy, Nigeria is the latest developing country to rapidly expand the number of international students it sends to Australia.

This year nearly double the number of Nigerians are studying in Australia compared with last year, many of them engineering students planning to work in their country’s oil industry.

By the end of May this year there were 923 Nigerian students enrolled in Australia, nearly double the number last year. Over 600 are in ­universities with nearly 250 in ­vocational ­education.

This explosive growth, which has pushed out traditional favourites, has seen some heart-warming improvements like the appointment of university representatives in Nigeria, and perhaps, also in other African countries:

So much so that, in UNSW’s student intake for the about-to-commence ­second semester, Nigeria will be ahead of traditionally strong source countries such as Singapore, Thailand and ­Taiwan. Next year it is likely to be in universities’ top 10 source ­countries for international students, Mr Voninski said.

UNSW, which has one of Australia’s best regarded engineering schools, has homed in on the Nigerian market, as well as other African countries where increasing numbers of students are studying overseas. “We started doing more in Africa about three years ago,” Mr Voninski said.

UNSW now has a permanent representative in Nigeria, Walter Ngwu, who said there was strong demand for overseas education in Nigeria. Its 129 universities could only accept an intake of 520,000 students each year, compared with about 1.6 million students who sit the university entrance exam.

Like me, you may be wondering the reasons behind this sudden turn of events. Nigerians have always preferred schools in the UK, the USA and then other countries; in that order. What changed? What caused this?

The causes are not far-fetched according to the report. Aside from attributing it early on in the report to Nigeria being the new "...Africa’s largest ­economy", it more specifically points a guilty finger to unfriendly UK policies which are not only harsh but also do not favor Nigerians.

Most Nigerian students have ­traditionally gone to the United Kingdom, where the country is the third-largest supplier of students after China and India. However, the UK’s decision to clamp down on post-study work rights for international students has caused ­Nigerians to consider other ­destinations, Mr Ngwu said.

He said that Australia’s streamlined visa processing for international ­students, as well as its post-study work rights scheme which offers a two-year stay in Australia after graduation for bachelor degree students, were ­attractive to Nigerians.

In the main, traveling to Australia to study is good, but certain obstacles have to be borne in mind by all intending students.

However, there are obstacles to ­studying in Australia. “High tuition fees and distance from Nigeria remain major barriers,” Mr Ngwu said, noting that the UK was only a six-hour flight away.

The good thing here is that there appear to be forces inside of Australia who are working to make things easier and better for students from Nigeria and other countries in Africa.

Austrade is sponsoring an Australian education road-show in September this year to Nigeria and to nearby Ghana, from where there is also a ­growing number of students coming to Australia. So far Austrade has attracted interest from 22 universities and vocational education providers.

The general manager of Austrade’s government, ministerial and international education division, John Angley, said it was a very high priority for Austrade to promote emerging education markets such as sub-Saharan Africa.

The University of Adelaide is also looking hard at the African market.

“The middle class in Nigeria, and the Nigerian diaspora, is growing . . . more Nigerians are seeking a world-class education,” said Kent Anderson, the university’s pro vice-chancellor (international).

We can only hope that things continue to get better and better for, not only the Nigerian or Ghanaian student intending to study in Australia, but also for all African students from any of the sub-Saharan countries.

6. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme
   The Scheme allows students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK to benefit from postgraduate study at a University in the UK which will help them to contribute toward the development of their home countries.
