Scholarship Description
The annual TWAS-USM Fellowships for Visiting Researchers in Malaysia is offered by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and sponsored by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

This Visiting Researchers Fellowships in natural sciences is for scientists from developing countries (other than Malaysia) who wish to pursue advanced research in natural sciences.

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)

Eligibility
Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a maximum age of 55 years on 31 December of the application year.
  • Be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia).
  • Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Malaysia or any developed country.
  • Hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences and a regular research assignment with at least five years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Provide an official Acceptance Letter from a department, laboratory or institute at USM (see sample Acceptance Letter in the application form). Requests for acceptance must be directed to the Dean, Institute of Postgraduate Studies, USM (Prof. Othman Sulaiman: by e-mail twasusm@gmail.com, othman@usm.my) who will facilitate assignment of a host supervisor. In contacting the Dean applicants must accompany their request for an Acceptance Letter with copy of their latest CV and a short write-up of research proposal (maximum 3 pages);
  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English;
  • Be financially responsible for any accompanying family member.

Scholarship benefits
USM will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.

  • Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters as attachments via e-mail directly to TWAS and USM. The subject line must contain: USM/VS/ candidate's surname. Alternatively, letters should be sent by post in sealed envelopes. Only signed reference letters can be accepted.
  • Applicants to the TWAS-USM Visiting Scholar Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS and USM (by post, fax or email).

PLEASE NOTE:
Applicants should be aware that they can apply for only one fellowship per year. With the exception of the fellowships "for research collaboration", all other fellowship programmes offered by TWAS and OWSD that are mutually exclusive.

Incomplete/unsigned applications will NOT be accepted. This also applies to submissions by fax and electronic mail which must include all enclosures and be signed (either digitally or by including a scanned signature).

Scholarship Description
The Malaysian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) are awarded by the Malaysian Government to nominated students from Commonwealth countries to study at post-graduate level in Malaysia.

This is a Government to Government scheme without any bond imposed by Malaysia.

The awards for Masters degree are between 12 to 24 months depending on the courses. Awards for pursuing PhD degree are for 3 years. The Awards are only applicable for candidates pursuing full-time degree programme in Malaysia.

Malaysia Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), applicants must fit the following criteria:
  • Not be more than 45 years of age during application.
  • Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
  • Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
    • IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
    • TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
  • In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants
  • Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Malaysia (research-based programme only)
  • Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the universities in Malaysia).
Selection criteria:
Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:-
  • High-level academic achievement
  • The quality of the research proposal and its potential contribution towards advancement of technology and human well-being.
  • Excellent communication, writing and reading skills in English Language

Malaysian International Scholarships (MIS)

The MTCP Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies provides opportunities for students to pursue advanced academic study in Malaysia.

This scholarship is a Government-to-Government basis, without any bond imposed by Malaysia.

Scholarships are intended for promising candidates who may be expected to make a significant contribution to their own countries on their return from Malaysia. The maximum duration is 36 months for PhD and upto 24 months for Masters Programme.

Taylor's University offers several forms of financial aid to for prospective International Students wishing to undertake undergraduate studies at the school.

This is not fixed, it is decided by the university every year. The University reserves the right to decide on the number of scholarships to be awarded.

Sponsorship duration
Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and are renewable upon meeting minimum CGPA 2.50 at the end of each academic year.

Scholarship offered is valid for the duration of the programme offered and strictly cannot be transferred to any other programmes at Taylor’s University.

Scholarship recipients are required to meet a minimum CGPA 2.50 at the end of each academic year in order to enjoy the scholarship / study grant in the subsequent years (where relevant). Failure to meet such academic requirement will have the scholarship / study grant terminated.

Scholarship benefits
Students are entitled to only ONE (1) scholarship / bursary / waiver at any one time including sponsorship from other institutions/bodies. The one with the highest quantum will automatically apply. However, students are still entitled to the alumni family discount.

Entitlements include:
  • RM20,000 tuition fee waiver per year or
    100% tuition fee waiver per year (whichever is lower)
  • RM8,000 tuition fee waiver per year
  • RM4,500 tuition fee waiver per year
