Scholarship Description
The Lissie Rathbone Undergraduate Scholarship is offered at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand for both qualified domestic and international students.

The Lissie Rathbone Scholarships were established in 1925 by the trustees of the late Lissie Rathbone, who bequeathed one half of her residuary Estate for such charitable, educational or religious objects as the trustees should select.

Eligibility
The scholarship is available for prospective undergraduate students who are citizens of countries other than New Zealand.

Candidates for each scholarship:
  1. must be under nineteen years of age on the first of December immediately preceding the date of the award of the scholarship;
  2. must be matriculated students of the University;
  3. may be of either sex;
  4. must be resident for one year preceding the award in the University of Canterbury district;
  5. must be enrolled as internal students of the University in a course for a degree, within the award of the University from time to time (subject to such regulations as may be consistent with the object of the scholarship) which may be selected by such scholar, his or her parents or guardians.
Each scholarship shall be awarded upon examination for excellence in the subjects of English and History,
provided that the Council shall not be bound to award the scholarship to the candidate solely on quality of
achievement in such subjects but may in its discretion take into account the financial circumstances of the
scholar, his or her parents, or guardians.

The qualification in which the award shall be made shall be NCEA level 3 or 4 or equivalent university
entrance qualifications, for English and History.

The tenure of each scholarship shall be for three years terminable, however, at any time if the Council, having received from the Academic Board an unfavourable report on the conduct or progress of the scholar, shall so determine.

Scholarship benefits
The current value of a scholarship is $750 per annum.

Scholarship Description
The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) aims to support candidates to gain knowledge and skills through post-graduate study in specific subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country.

Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society, or private business organisations.

The New Zealand Government is pleased to advise that the second round of New Zealand Development Scholarships is now open and we invite candidates to apply for postgraduate study in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) aims to support candidates to gain knowledge and skills through post-graduate study in specific subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country.  Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society, or private business organisations.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following NZDS Scholarships eligibility criteria before their application will be considered against the selection criteria, including any region-specific criteria. Applicants are expected to continue residing in their home country during the Scholarship application and selection process.

To be eligible, you must:
  • be a citizen of an NZDS participating country (permanent residents of New Zealand are NOT eligible to apply)
  • be residing in your country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application
  • not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia, or another developed country*
  • not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country
  • be aged 17 or over before the scholarship start date
  • be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for a qualification already in progress in New Zealand or another country†
  • not have completed, or nearly completed, a qualification at a similar level (i.e. applicants must apply for a higher level qualification than any previously attained), unless strong developmental relevance is demonstrated
  • satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand education institution at which the qualification is to be undertaken, including English language criteria
  • have been working in your home country since completing their highest tertiary qualification gained to date, preferably for at least two years prior to application
  • be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the relevant sector in your home country, and to your country’s development in general
  • be able to take up the scholarship in the academic year for which it is offered.
You are NOT eligible if you:
  • are studying full-time at post-secondary level
  • are transferring from another tertiary scholarship (either in New Zealand or in another country) to a New Zealand Development Scholarship
  • hold, or have held, a New Zealand Government or Australian Government scholarship in the 24 months preceding the scholarship start date, or have been terminated from a New Zealand or Australian Government scholarship previously.
English language requirements
New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. All applicants should check the IELTS (academic stream) or TOEFL score required for admission to their selected New Zealand education institution. As a guide, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications may require a higher score.

Candidates must provide the original copy of their IELTS or TOEFL exam result as a pre-condition of placement. Results must be no older than 24 months at the time of the scholarship start date.

Candidates who show particularly strong developmental relevance and applicability may be able to receive three months’ English language training in New Zealand prior to starting their main academic qualification. Candidates with IELTS of 6.0 overall, with no band less than 5.5, should therefore still consider applying.

PLEASE NOTE:
The scholarship is funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme - the New Zealand Government’s overseas aid and development programme. They are managed by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

All awardees are required to return to their home country for a minimum period of two years following completion of their scholarship in order to contribute to their country’s economic and social development.

If offered a scholarship, you must:
  • be able to satisfy Immigration New Zealand requirements for international student entry to New Zealand (i.e. medical checks, police clearances/character checks, etc.)
  • not hold another scholarship during the period of the New Zealand Development Scholarship
  • agree in writing that you will return to their home country for a minimum period of two years following completion of their scholarship in order to contribute to their country’s social or economic development.

Scholarship Description
The University of Canterbury offers the UC Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship to high-achieving undergraduate international students.

These scholarships were established in 2011 by the University of Canterbury to recognise and support top achieving students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

The scholarships shall be awarded to students who intend to begin their first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury and who have completed or are completing a university entrance qualification.

Outlined below are the regulations for obtaining a UC Entrance Scholarship of between $1000 and $3000 for your first year at UC.

Eligibility
To be eligible, the following must be met:
  • The scholarships will be awarded to students who are beginning their first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury and who have completed a university entrance qualification at a New Zealand school.
    International students are also eligible, but must have sat for an entrance qualification (e.g. NCEA) in NZ or sat for CIE or IB either in NZ or overseas.

    The scholarships are available only to students whose first year of study in an undergraduate degree programme is no more than one calendar year after they have completed their study for a university entrance qualification.

  • Recipients may commence study in either Semester 1 or Semester 2, and must be enrolled full time in their first year of study in an undergraduate degree programme.
    (“Full time” is here defined as 0.8 EFTS or more for whole-year study, and the equivalent if enrolling for the first time for study commencing in Semester 2.)

  • Each scholarship will be tenable for one year.

  • The scholarships will be awarded to students who have gained the academic qualifications listed in the appendix, and who have gained university entrance.

    Students completing university entrance requirements in New Zealand via other pathways will also be eligible for consideration, and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The written statement should be no more than 500 words and must highlight the applicant's potential to succeed in business studies at the University of Auckland and include details about their career goals, motivations and also demonstrate how they can be an ambassador for the University of Auckland Business School.

UC International First Year Scholarship

Scholarship Description
This University of Canterbury (UC) International First Year Scholarship, established in 2012 by the University of Canterbury, recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

The scholarship, which is of a year tenure, invites applications from international students from secondary schools, pre-university institutions, universities or other tertiary institutions outside New Zealand.

University of Canterbury International First Year Scholarship
Eligibility
Eligible candidates must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas (see 'PLEASE NOTE' section below).

They must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a University Entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree programme.

Such programmes of study may be at secondary schools, pre-university institutions, universities or other tertiary institutions. Programmes that qualify students for entry into the second year of a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree programme may be included, but the scholarship will not be awarded for tenure during a third year of undergraduate study. Applicants should check the University’s “Education Systems of Study” webpage, which lists qualifying programmes by country.

Students who are undertaking, or have completed, a Foundation Studies programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply.

The scholarship may not be held by students who:
(1) have already undertaken study in an undergraduate degree programme at a New Zealand university; or
(2) have applied for Transfer of Credit to an undergraduate degree programme at the University.

Selection criteria:
The scholarship will be awarded by the University of Canterbury Council, on the recommendation of a Selection Committee.

In making its recommendations the Committee will consider:
  1. quality of achievement in a programme of study;
  2. evidence of leadership potential;
  3. involvement in cultural, sport or community activities; and
  4. evidence of international experience, which may include travel, attendance at seminars, and other activities outside the applicant’s home country.

The New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) offers full tuition fees plus living stipends for up to 36 months for international students to undertake PhD study at a New Zealand university.

The NZIDRS Scholarship reflects New Zealand Government’s commitment to deepening educational partnerships. The country's education system provides students with the knowledge and skills to achieve results equal to the world’s best. The scholarship programme is about sharing this excellence with the rest of the world, and bringing the best from elsewhere to share their knowledge with New Zealand.

Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the NZIDRS scholarships are a significant educational opportunity. Recipients are selected upon Academic Merit.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS)
Eligibility
In order to receive the scholarship, you must meet ALL five of the following eligibility criterion. You must:
  1. be a citizen of any country except New Zealand, Australia and Fiji
  2. hold a minimum equivalent 3.6/4.0 GPA OR A / A+ average in your most recent or highest post graduate tertiary qualification
  3. conduct your PhD study in New Zealand (not from a distance)
  4. meet the requirements for direct entry into a PhD programme at a New Zealand University. This includes; having completed the required academic qualifications for direct entry and meeting the requirements for English language proficiency
  5. If you have commenced your PhD studies in New Zealand, your start date must be after 15 January 2014
Selection criteria:
The scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and the impact of the proposed research for New Zealand. Research projects should have a tangible, positive effect on:
  • New Zealand’s economy, in terms of international trade and business development in key sectors
  • Or, New Zealand’s population in terms of health and safety
  • Or, Research and scholarship in the above two areas

The NZIDRS provides full tuition fees, plus living and other allowances for successful applicants.

Allowances would include Annual living allowance, Annual health insurance allowance, Book and thesis allowance – across 3 year tenure, Travel allowance and Establishment allowance – once only.

DEADLINE:
Applications must be received by Education New Zealand no later than 5pm (NZ Time) on 15 July each year. In those years where the 15th falls upon a weekend, applications will be accepted until 5pm the Monday immediately following the 15th.

Applications for the 2014 round will be called for in April 2014 and will close on Tuesday 15 July 2014.

PLEASE NOTE:
Scanned, e-mailed or faxed application forms and official documents will not be accepted under any circumstances. This is non-negotiable.

Applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of the selection process within one week of the annual selection meeting.

Applicants should hold one of the following English language test scores, achieved no longer than two (2) years prior to the time of application. Please note that some disciplines of research may require a higher score:
  • An IELTS Academic Test with an overall score of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6; or
  • A TOEFL test score of at least 575, including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English; or
  • A score of 233 in the Computer based TOEFL, including an Essay Writing score of 4.5; or
  • An overall score of 100 in the Internet based TOEFL; or
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Grade B;
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Grade C
