Eligibility
Schneider Electric invites all qualified students to its fifth annual Go Green in the City global business case challenge for a chance to revolutionize energy management and gain unique insight into one of the leading global energy management companies.

Who can participate:
  • Business and engineering** students, eighteen (18) years of age or older, pursuing their bachelor’s (at least 2nd year), master’s or MBA degree are eligible to compete.
  • Go Green in the City 2015 is open to two-member teams with at least one female member (note: both members must comply with the degree requirements stated above).
  • Both of the team members must study in the same country for the duration of the competition. They are not, however, required to be from the same university, nor are they required to study the same subject or be in the same year, as long as they are not in their first year of their undergraduate education.
  • English language competency is required.
  • Teams from all over the world are welcome to compete.
No exceptions can be made regarding the terms of the eligibility requirements.

**All branches of engineering and business programs are accepted.

It's that time again. This is the 2014 Call for Applications for Residency: African Literary Writers.

The Sylt Foundation hereby call on writers of contemporary African literature to apply for the two month African Writer’s Residency Award.

The African Writer’s Residency offers an Award of a two month residency to writers of contemporary African literature, who are related to or engaging with contemporary themes and concerns of Africa and the African Diaspora.

The Award is open to published writers of poetry, prose, plays and novels.

  • an uninterrupted period for writing

While writers are managing career and personal demands, the vital process of conceptualizing and reflection, researching and developing new ideas, so essential to the writing process is often limited.

A period of quiet uninterrupted time to focus on exploring ideas is critical to this process which is a challenge when balancing the pressures of everyday life.

Method of Application
Application requirements:
Writers of African literature are invited to submit:
  • a project proposal of the project they wish to work on while in residence
  • it can be a current or proposed literary project
  • a synopsis of the novel, short story or poetry project
Applications to include:
  • Copy of a valid passport conforming to Schengen visa requirements
  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Writer’s Profile in English – 500 words
  • Two (2) Letters of Reference in English from literary professionals, publishers or academics
Plus an excerpt (stating the publishers) from:
  • one published book
  • a volume of poetry
  • a (publicly staged) play with information as to where and on what date it was staged
Note: Digital applications in MS Word or PDF documents only accepted (no hard copy proposals accepted)

The copyright of all published material will be respected by the Foundation so digital copies of published books may be submitted and will be handled with due care. Material submitted will not be returned to the applicant.

Application for the 2014 Shell Ideas360 Global Student Competition is currently ongoing. All undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to participate.

Shell Ideas360 Global Student Competition is organised by Shell International Limited for students to develop game-changing ideas for tackling energy, water and food issues.
Eligibility
Participation in the Competition is open to any person who:
  • is, or will be aged 18 or over by May 31, 2014; and

  • Main Prize. A National Geographic Expedition for the winning team members, chosen from a range of available trips.
  • Stage 3 Teams. The five teams or individuals selected for Stage 3 of the competition will be flown out to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in order to present their idea to the judging panel at the Shell Eco-Marathon event in May 2014.

Develop an innovative idea related to Energy, Water or Food. Use your workspace to share draft ideas with the Shell Ideas360 community, submitting your final idea for evaluation by 16 December 2013.

STAGE 2 (20 JANUARY - 31 MARCH 2014)
Develop your idea. Up to 100 teams/participants will be selected to develop their idea with support from a Shell Mentor and Subject Matter Experts, and demonstrate in more detail why Shell should invest in it.

STAGE 3 (16 APRIL - 15 MAY 2014)
Final presentation and selection. Five teams/participants will be invited to present their idea at the Final Event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The winner will be selected and announced at the end of this event.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is an annual award for unpublished short fiction administered and funded by the Commonwealth Foundation.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is part of Commonwealth Writers - the cultural initiative from the Commonwealth Foundation.

Commonwealth Writers develops the craft of individual writers and builds communities of emerging voices which can influence the decision-making processes affecting their lives. The Prize aims to identify talented writers who will go on to inspire their local communities.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is an annual award for unpublished short fiction administered and funded by the Commonwealth Foundation.

Eligibility
The following eligibility guidelines apply:
  • Entrants must be citizens of a Commonwealth country. The Commonwealth Foundation will request verification of citizenship before winners are selected. Writers from non-Commonwealth countries (including the Republic of Ireland and Zimbabwe) are not eligible.
  • For regional purposes, entries will be judged by country of citizenship. Where the writer has dual citizenship, the entry will be judged in the region where the writer is permanently resident.
  • Entrants must be aged 18 years or over.
  • There is no requirement for the writer to have current residence in a Commonwealth country, providing she/he is a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
  • All entries will be accepted at the discretion of the Commonwealth Foundation which will exercise its judgement, in consultation with the prize chair as necessary, in ruling on questions of eligibility. The ruling of the chair on questions of eligibility is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into.
Selection Criteria:
The final selection will be judged by an international judging panel; experienced readers will assist the named judges in selecting the long lists.

Fields of study
Writing of short fiction. The story must be the entrant’s own work.

The story must be original and should not have been previously published anywhere in full or in part. Published work is taken to mean published in any printed, publicly accessible form, e.g. anthology, magazine, newspaper. It is also taken to mean published online, with the exception of personal blogs and personal websites.

Number of awards
There will be five winners, one from each region. One regional winner will be selected as the overall winner. Only one entry per writer may be submitted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

Scholarship benefits
The overall winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize will receive £5,000 and the remaining four regional winners £2,500. If the winning short story is a translation into English, the translator will receive additional prize money: £2,000 for the overall winning story and £1,000 for a regional winning story.

Worldwide copyright of each story remains with the writer. The Commonwealth Foundation will have the unrestricted right to publish the winning stories (the overall winning story and the four regional winning stories) in an anthology and for promotional purposes.

The overall and regional winners will be expected to take part in publicity activities including social media where possible. The overall and regional winners will be expected to undertake a mutually acceptable programme of regional outreach activities to develop and promote Commonwealth Writers.

Method of Application
Please note the following rules while submitting your entry:
  • Entries previously submitted to the Commonwealth Short Story Prize are not eligible.
  • All entries must be in English. Translations of short stories written in languages other than English are eligible if submitted by the writer (not the translator) and provided the translator is a citizen of a Commonwealth country. Details of the translator must be stated on the entry.
  • Entries must be 2,000 words minimum, 5,000 words maximum.
  • Entries should be uploaded in a PDF document. Please save your document as a PDF and use the title of the story as the file name. Please note the story must not be saved as ‘Commonwealth Story’, ‘Short Story’ or any other generic title. If it is not possible to save the entry as a PDF document, it may be uploaded as a Microsoft Word document, with the file name in the same format as above. The first page should include the name of the story and the number of words (and details of the translator if it is a story written in a language other than English).
  • The author’s details should be included in the entry form. They must not be given anywhere on the uploaded document. All entries are judged anonymously.
  • All entries should be submitted in Arial 12 point font and double line spacing.
  • There are no restrictions on setting, genre or theme.
  • The story should be adult fiction and must not have been written for children alone.

Additionally, applications that were entered into other developer app contests are ineligible for the contest, regardless whether they were winning apps. Similarly, updated versions of applications entered in other developer contests are ineligible.
  • When you enter an application in the Google Cloud Developer Challenge by submitting the URL to the application, access details to the application and a 400 word manual that describes how to use your application we will make it available to all contest judges for free, exclusively for the purposes of judging. If you intend to sell your application after the conclusion of the contest, you must make available a "trial" version of the application for judging. We recommend that your trial version include full functionality, but with a timed expiration, rather than including limited functionality with no expiration. Judges will evaluate your application based only on the functionality accessible to them, so it makes sense to provide the fullest range of capabilities possible in your contest app.

All entries must include a full bibliography of sources for the essay. The bibliography should be excluded from the essay word count. The bibliography should be the last page of the essay. 2). Complete the entry form and submit it online. Entries may only be submitted in English.
3). Entries will be reviewed by the competition administrators, and only those that meet a certain standard and pass the preliminary screening will be nominated and published on the competition website. You will receive a message from us confirming that your entry has been nominated. If your entry does not pass the screening, you will have a chance to brush it up and submit it again.

Assessment criteria:
Entries will be evaluated and nominated based on the following criteria among other factors:

  • feasibility (e.g. relatively low capital investment requirement)
  • innovation

Selection process:

  2. Entrants may refine their entries up until the entry deadline to reflect the comments and recommendations received. They may also support their entry by submitting a video presentation of their enterprise idea or activity (up to 3 minutes).
  3. The 10 entries receiving most votes in each of the two categories will be considered as finalists.
  4. From among the finalists, the judges will make the final selection of three winners (Grand Prize, 2nd Prize and 3rd Prize) in each category.
  5. Entries will be evaluated based on their entrepreneurial vision, feasibility, innovation, leadership, social impact, and sustainability, among other factors.
  6. In addition, the People’s Choice Prize will be given to the entry with the largest number of votes in each of the two categories.

Award Description
The African Investment Climate Research (AFRICRES), in partnership with The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) is organising the 2014 Africa Farmer Organisation of the year Awards.

Farmer organizations (FOs), in Africa, are important support vehicles for raising smallholder farmers’ incomes and livelihoods by providing services that are demand-driven and income enhancing to their members.

To enhance image and credibility of FOs; Setting performance standards for FOs; To enhance competitiveness and aspiration among FOs and To promote peer learning and networking, AFRICRES, in partnership with AGRA and SACAU will be organizing the Annual Africa Farmer Organization of the Year Award (AFOYA) in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Eligibility
To be eligible, your FO must be registered and resident in Africa and must be in active operation for at least two years.

FOs must be Members governed.

Ineligibility:
  • Regional (Apexes)1 FOs are NOT eligible.
  • FOs with Tobacco and broadly prohibited narcotics in their value chain
1 :- The Apex FOs are those representing FOs across several countries within the five African Regions

All FOs registered across the length and breadth of Africa

Fields of awards
The awards will be presented at a gala dinner to successful Farmer Organisations in recognition of their sterling achievements, in five key areas that are used to measure successful FOs:
  1. Governance and Accountability;
  2. Income diversity; 
  3. Advocacy; 
  4. Female and youth participation and 
  5. Access to market.
Number of awards
The awards will be presented in SIX categories as outlined below:

1. Governance and Accountability
This is an award for a FO that scores highest on governance and accountability to its members.

2. Income Diversity Award
This is an award for a FO with the highest score on diversified portfolio of its income sources and which manifests sustainability.

3. Female and Youth Participation Award
FOs must include as many young people and women in its activities. This award is given to a FO that scores highest for an active participation of these groups in its activities.

4. Advocacy
The FO must be doing remarkably well with policy advocacy and networking for the good of its members.

5. Market Access Award
This award is given to a FO that scores highest on market access for the inputs and produce of its members.

6. Africa FO of the Year Award (AFOYA)
The overall FO of the Year recipient will be selected from the winners of the categories shown above.

The 2014 Africa FO of the year will also be crowned at the awards ceremony.

A one-day conference, which will take place on the day before the awards, will attract prominent speakers with expertise in the broader area of agricultural value chain systems.

Method of Application
If you believe your FO is eligible, and you want to apply, follow the steps below:
  1. Complete the entry form template found on the official website (link to it is below) and email it to the provided email by 30 June 2014, at 17.00 Hours South Africa time.
  2. The nominee should supply audited or verifiable financial statements from 2010 to 2013 or latest audited financials or management accounts (Income and Expenditure Accounts)

CATEGORY SELECTION
FOs are welcome to compete in ONLY ONE of the five categories, that is, 1-5 as listed above under 'Number of awards'.

REQUIREMENTS
Entrants must fill all questions. Incomplete entries will be disqualified. The document should be completed in MS Word as far as possible and entrants must use the template to make inter-FO comparisons possible.

DEADLINES:
Deadline for submission of entries and material is on 30th June, 2014.

Finalists are to be notified on 31st August, 2014; while deadline for awards banquet and media releases to announce winners is on 13th November, 2014.

PLEASE NOTE:
The event is a follow-up to the, very successful, 2013 Africa Farmer Organisation Awards and Conference which took place in Accra (Ghana) on the 28th of November 2013. The event attracted government ministers, NGOs, senior civil servants, regional and national Farmer Organisations together with smallholder farmers throughout Africa.

JUDGES
Submissions will be judged by an independent panel of experts drawn from the public, government and private sectors as well as from apex organisations. Judges reserve the right not to award a winner in any category if they do not find entries that reach the desired standard. The decision of the judges is final.

LIST OF FO MEMBERS
The entry form must be accompanied by a signed membership list and full names and telephone contacts of all management committee members.

The 2014 Adobe® Design Achievement Awards inspires higher education students from around the world, to go global. Individual Student category winners receive:
  • US$2,000 cash, a winner’s certificate, and a 3D award

Essay Description
Each year, the Commonwealth Essay Competition, run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, inspires thousands of young writers from all over the world.

The Competition aims to celebrate and nurture the creative talents of young people across the Commonwealth, providing a platform for students to compete with their peers in each of the 54 nations which make up this unique association.

It is the world’s oldest and largest schools’ international writing competition. Past winners include Mr Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore and Elspeth Huxley.

Eligibility
Are you a writer? Are you interested in the world around you? Do you want your voice to be heard by others? If so, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is definitely for you. The RCS encourages you to be creative in your response to their topics.

You can submit a poem, letter, article, story, essay or even a short play. The choice is yours. Just get writing!

Open to all Commonwealth citizens aged 18 and under, the Essay Competition offers young people the opportunity to make their voice heard on a global platform and engage with issues important to them. The essay competition gives young people from diverse backgrounds a platform to express their views about the world and their dreams for the future.

Participants continue to demonstrate their ability to stimulate and provoke discussions about important issues like (but not limited to) poverty, sustainable development, gender inequality, child labour and universal education.

Entries for the 2014 essay competition can be submitted online or by post for the 2014 competition. However, online submissions are highly encouraged wherever possible.

Entrants are judged in two age groups, Junior (under 14 years) and Senior (14-18 years).

The theme of the competition for this year is ‘Team Commonwealth’.

Junior Category (Born after 1st May 2000):

  3. What makes a good team? What makes a good team player?
  4. Tell us about an instance (or two) where people from different generations have worked together.
  5. Have there been times in your life when you wished you had someone to team up with?
Senior Category (Born between 2nd May 1995 and 1st May 2000):
  1. Team Commonwealth! How would you describe what your country has to offer other members of the team?
  2. How can sport build peace in troubled communities?
  3. What part does competition play in people’s daily lives?
  4. Explore the relationship between ethics, sport and human rights.
  5. ‘We’re a good partnership, you and I!’
Number of awards
In 2012, over 8,000 young writers applied and 1,000 participants from 245 schools, in 38 countries across the Commonwealth received an award for their entry.

Entries can be submitted online or by post for the 2014 competition. However, online submissions are highly encouraged wherever possible.
