Top 200 Colleges and Universities in the World

World University Web Ranking: Top 200 Colleges and Universities in the World

Intending international students often discover the difficulty encountered in trying to choose a school to apply to outside of their home country. This can be overcome if there is a ranking that compares different schools against the same yardstick.
4 International Colleges & Universities is an international higher education search engine and directory reviewing accredited Universities and Colleges in the world. It includes 11,000 Colleges and Universities, ranked by web popularity, in 200 countries.

The current ranking (i.e. from academic year 2012) is based upon an algorithm that included three unbiased and independent web metrics extracted from three different search engines: Google Page Rank, Alexa Traffic Rank, and Majestic Seo Referring Domains. It is important to note that this method does not rank school or their programs, by the quality of education or level of services provided.

7 Things International Students Must Do Before Picking a University or College of Choice

Written by a Guest Contributor

Every year universities / colleges launch a marketing blitzkrieg to attract international students to their campuses. Representatives of the colleges make their way to different countries, hosting open forums to attract students and at the same time answering any questions these students might have about the college and its degree courses.

The number of international students in colleges in countries like U.S is growing, which underlines the fact that a growing number of students want to study abroad.

Students who plan to study abroad need to be very careful about picking a college; they need to make doubly sure that a particular course offered by a college is worth their investment in terms of time and money. After all, studying abroad calls for major financial investment(s) and you don’t want to be going wrong with the choice of the college.

International Students

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you decide to study at a college you believe fits your needs and requirements perfectly.

Talk to the Student Counselors

Most colleges, who accept international students, have a department that handles queries from them. So, get in touch with this department and talk to the student counselors.

Ask them as many questions as you can think about the university, the academic program, the reputation of this program, student support services, and also the student life.

You need to be very clear about what you are getting into before you make the trip to a foreign country to enroll for a study program.

Understand the Courses Inside and Out

Some students make the cardinal sin of not going through the various study modules that a course covers before they enroll for it. The best colleges have put up the course modules in detail on their website, so it makes sense to go through them.

If you have any doubts about the course and what it will cover, shoot an email to the college or talk directly to the counselor or even the program in charge. Do not have any doubts about the course; get them cleared before you enroll for it.

Talk to Current Students

In a world where social media is simplifying interpersonal connections, it’s not difficult to get in touch with students who are part of the same college/university where you’re planning to study. You will also be able to find students who have enrolled in or are planning to enroll for the same course that you’re thinking about enrolling for.

Connect with them over the social network and ask them pointed questions about the program and student life. What’s more, make sure you stay in touch with them.

What this also does is that it helps you establish contact with people who’re in a position to help you in your student life, especially when you’re taking first steps in a university in a foreign land.

Calculate Costs

Can you afford to enroll for a particular degree from a particular college? What is the amount of scholarship you can expect? What is the cost of living on-campus/off-campus? What are the accommodations, how much do they cost?

Calculate each and every aspect of the costs you will incur, apart from the tuition fees. Each cost, however minuscule, must be factored into your considerations. You could even figure in the cost with relation to the yearly inflation. The total cost calculations of the degree is an exhaustive and time consuming process, but something that needs to be done to ensure you can afford a particular degree.

Do the cost comparison of a few degrees to zero in on a degree that fits your budget.

Asses Job Opportunities at the Destination

Many international students want to stay and work in the same country after they finish their programs. These students need to make sure the degree will lead to a job that allows them to live and earn in the foreign country. For example, if you want to enroll for a particular degree offered by an English university, you need to ensure that upon completion of the degree, you’ll get a satisfactory job that’ll allow you stay and work in England.

Different countries have different rules of employment for foreign nationals and these must be understood. Some countries have a specific timeframe within which a student must get a permanent job, if they don’t they’ll have to leave the country. This is why it’s important to know whether a particular degree will lead to employment opportunities in the foreign country.

Avoid Misplaced Priorities

Here’s the harsh truth – for some students a degree from some foreign college is just a means of finding an employment foothold in that country. This is a misplaced priority.

The focus must be on choosing the right degree from the right college, the kind of degree that helps meet your knowledge and career goals.

Employment opportunities will follow if you have the right knowledge and skill sets. You actually might end up choosing the wrong college and end up making a wrong career choice if you’ve misplaced priorities.

Trust Your Instincts

Sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, you still might not be sure whether a particular degree is the right pick for you. In such cases, it’s important you trust your gut feel about a degree. It’s important to understand that you might have to make certain compromises as well. For e.g. a degree that is your first choice, might not fit your budget, and you will have to choose the next best option. Here, your instinct comes into play. You need to do what’s right for you and your life as a whole. If you think, a particular college suits your profile, interests and preferences go for it, even if it doesn’t meet a few of your parameters.

It’s important you have a clear and logical thought process behind college selection, especially when you’re planning to study abroad. Otherwise, it won’t deliver returns on investments as per your expectations. Picking the right college is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life, so you don’t want it to go wrong.

Roadmap to Excellent Engineering Qualifications in Europe

European Qualifications in Engineering

Deciding on a career path has never been easy but if you decide to pursue a career in engineering, you would be open to a number of opportunities in Europe. Also, many sub-specialties you may become interested in exist in European countries well-known for high quality research, excellent infrastructure and high level academics.

Taking the United Kingdom (UK) as a point of focus and a reflection of what obtains in most European countries, we examine the route to getting an Engineering degree.

Generally, the emphasis in Engineering education across Europe is learning to think for yourself and work independently.
In the UK, this is achieved by closely aligning Engineering and Technology education with industry. Students are offered several opportunities to work alongside seasoned professionals on various research projects at international level before graduation.

Basic Considerations

General admission requirements
To be accepted into an undergraduate engineering program in the UK, you must have good scores in your O'level Mathematics, Physics and/or Chemistry.

Regarding language requirements, a proof of your proficiency in the English language is MANDATORY if you are from a non-English speaking country. Your proficiency may be proven by obtaining good scores in English Tests like the TOEFL and IELTS.

Applications for admission into undergraduate courses are made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) for both foreign and UK home students. UCAS is a British admission service responsible for managing undergraduate applications to full-time higher education courses at universities and colleges in the UK.

Choosing your course and school
Along with your application, you are allowed to submit up to FIVE related courses you would want if your application for your preferred course turns out unsuccessful. All applications are completed by mid-January of the year in which candidates wish to start their studies.

In certain situations, an EARLY deadline of the month of October of the year before your studies commence is the rule. This situation exists when you apply to universities like Cambridge or Oxford; and also when you apply to courses like Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science for all UK schools.

Please note that candidates cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford at the same time. Unless you already have a degree or are going to complete a degree, you may not commence a new course at either of the universities.

Students need to do important background checks on universities to find out what suits them most. Important parameters to research about and assess are the school's ranking, location, faculty, facilities, foreign student population, etc etc.

Check your preferred university website(s) for information on admission norms, eligibility criteria and deadline for your course, both preferred and alternatives, as these may vary from course to course and school to school.
Funding your study
It is important to consider how you would fund your study - personally, family contributions or financial aid. These, when considered early on, prevents a lot of hassles and headaches later on.

Several Universities in the UK offer financial aid in the form scholarships and grants to both foreign International and UK home students each year in various fields. UCAS is also well equipped to give you good information on student finance and preparing for your studies as well.

Study & Scholarships is currently compiling a list of Top Scholarships in UK for Engineering Students and would provide a link to it here when completed. Meanwhile, here are scholarships in UK for international students.

Engineering Institutions

Although opinions may differ, of course; but the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking is among the most influential university rankings by higher education professionals in the world. It "...judges world class universities across all of their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook."

The THE ranking is published every year. According to its 2015-2014 annual ranking, there are thirteen top-rated UK universities out of the top 100 universities for engineering in the world. In their order of ranking from top to bottom, these are:
  1. University of Cambridge
  2. University of Oxford
  3. Imperial College London
  4. Univerity of Manchester
  5. University College London
  6. University of Edinburgh
  7. University of Nottingham
  8. University of Bristol
  9. University of Southampton
  10. Brunel University
  11. University of Leeds
  12. Univerity ofBirmingham
  13. Univerity of Sheffield
Universities in the UK, like their counterparts elsewhere in Europe, keep pace with the changing demands and needs of our constantly and rapidly evolving internet-fast world. The University of Edinburgh, for example, now offers a masters (MSc) program in Sensor Networks, and the Imperial College London had in the very recent past, launched new civil engineering courses.

Editor's note: Another consideration for your perusal is the Academic Ranking Of World Universities published every year by researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

In conclusion...

Students with UK engineering degrees are in high demand by employers including industry giants like IBM, Rolls Royce, HP, Siemens and many more. This is also true of most engineering universities in many countries of Europe.

A largely recent hike in fees in UK universities for undergraduate courses, seems not to have affected most of the postgraduate courses. Despite this hike, however, the clamor for a UK qualification, and by extension European qualification, seem to be increasing the more as students are now more eager than ever to study in the UK because of the quality of education.

If you successfully gain admission into a UK university, then I'd like to end this write-up by telling you that the “sky is just the beginning for you”. Good-luck in your engineering pursuits!

In addition to several Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, State-owned and Private-owned universities, Nigeria also has a number of universities owned and funded by its Federal Government.

Nigeria organised into 36 states and a federal capital territory (FCT) in Abuja, expanded its tertiary education to reach all of its subregions, following the oil boom years of the 1970s.

PLEASE NOTE:
In recognition of the need to encourage private participation in the provision of university education, the Federal Government established a law in 1993, allowing private sectors to establish universities following guidelines prescribed by the Government. Recently, therefore, licenses have been granted to individuals, corporate bodies and religious bodies to establish private universities in Nigeria.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), the accreditation body of every university in Nigeria, enforces uniform standards and sets admissions capacity for each university. As at October 2012, there were 37 and Federal and State owned Universities respectively, and 50 Private Universities. In 2013, 3 more Federal schools were added making it up to 40 federal universities.

Degrees awarded:
Nigerian universities generally award the undergraduate Bachelors, postgraduate Masters degrees and the doctoral and postdoc in several disciplines; with many also awarding Pre-Degree and Degree Foundation Diplomas, various Certificate courses and postgraduate Diplomas (PGD). The official lingua fraca in Nigeria, which is also the language of instruction at all levels of education from kindergarten to phD level, is the English Language.

Academic calender:
It is pertinent to note that the academic year of the various universities, although incessantly disrupted by non-ending strings of strike actions by ASUU, run from October to September annually; and undergraduate candidates are expected to select two Universities, two Polytechnics, and two Colleges of Education while registering for the Jamb UTME, which is a unified undergraduate matriculation examination for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. Entry requirements for most undergraduate courses include a minimum of Five O’ Level Credit passes to include English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings in SSCE, GCE or NECO Examinations.

Jamb Direct Entry is an opportunity provided for candidates with advanced level qualifications to gain undergraduate admission into tertiary institutions. Jamb DE candidates register for and apply directly to their institution of choice. Jamb does not conduct any direct entry exams, candidates access the universities based on their A Level and O Level performance. Universities, however, may decide to conduct a Jamb direct entry screening test.

For postgraduate study, it is advisable to contact the admissions department of your institution of interest for detailed information and possible financial aid details, if available for your course of study.
