Fatima al Fihri was born in Tunisia in 800. At a young age, she moved with her family to Fez, Morocco. In 859 Fatima founded the world’s first academic degree-granting university existing today, the University of Qarawiyyin, which is considered the oldest university in the world.

The University of Qarawiyyin became the most important cultural and intellectual bridge for Muslim and European cultures. Many of the scholars of Qarawiyyin became great scientists such as Mohammed al Idriss and Ibn Khaldoun. Her name represents sustainability, the women contribution to the knowledge society, a bridge between different cultures through education and a tribute to, now at days, a rather unknown Arabic woman who played a crucial role in the Islamic Golden Age.

Eligibility
Eligibility varies depending on the Grant, Funding or Fellowship. Please see official website for details (link found below).

FARA in its Vision and Mission statements emphasizes its commitments to the Millennium Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, and CAADP’s goal of agriculture-led development. It confirms in its Value Proposition that it will do this by bringing continental and global perspectives to the networking support of the SROs and NARS. FARA’s Super Objective is to sustainably reduce African food insecurity and poverty and enhance environmental conditions. This is to be done by sustainably establishing high broad-based agricultural growth in Africa (General Objective). FARA will make this contribution by achieving its Specific Objective of sustainable improvements to broad-based agricultural productivity, competitiveness and markets.

  • NSF1/3: Advocacy and policy – Supports the SROs and their constituent NARS in establishing appropriate institutional and organisational arrangements for regional ARD (including conducive research infrastructure and policy and financial environments).
  • NSF2: Access to knowledge and technologies – Empowers researchers and end users by providing them with access to information, learning opportunities, and new technologies. This is achieved through mechanisms for exchange of technology-based innovations and information both within and between sub-regions, and through decision-making tools designed to transform information into knowledge that can be used for innovation.
  • NSF4: Capacity strengthening – Ensures that Africa has the human and institutional capacity in public, private and civil society organisations and institutions for innovations needed to ensure the achievement of improved and broad-based agricultural productivity, competitiveness and markets. This is essential if the African Vision of a 6% annual growth in agricultural production is to be achieved.
  • NSF5: Partnerships and strategic alliances – Catalyses and facilitates the establishment of partnerships that bring together the range of expertise and capacity needed to achieve FARA’s objectives. These partnerships draw on all FARA stakeholders, both African and non-African, depending on the task at hand. They create capacity for agricultural innovation which, linked with the other supporting functions, improves the efficacy and impact of African ARD.

Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Funding Scholarships for International Scholars, Scientists and Academics

Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Funding Schemes

Course(s) Offered: Any topic
Course Level: Graduate (research)
Provider: SNSF
Country to Study in: Switzerland

Scholarship Description
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), established as a foundation under private law since 1952, is Switzerland’s foremost institution in the promotion of scientific research.

The Foundation offers a wide range of research funding schemes which are open to scientists and academics of any nationality working in Switzerland.

It has funded research work in all scientific fields on behalf of the Swiss Confederation. With few exceptions (mainly research programmes), the topics and scope of the research can be defined by the researchers themselves.

In fulfilling its mandate to promote scientific research, the SNSF has devised a variety of funding schemes under which researchers can submit applications and request financial support.

The funding schemes are organised as follows: Projects; Careers; Programmes; Infrastructures; AND Public science communication.

Eligibility
Basically any scientist (male and female) working in Switzerland regardless of their nationality can apply for funding from the SNSF.

The requirements as regards to scientific qualifications, age limits, individual research experience, etc. vary depending on the type of funding selected.

These requirements are outlined in detail in the information for individual funding programmes, or with the respective calls for applications. Please see official website (link to it is below) for this.

Eligible groups
Citizens of ANY nationality (scientists and/or academics)

Fields of study
In the funding of Projects, Careers, Infrastructures and Science communication, the applicants are free to define the topic and scope of their research projects themselves.

At the SNSF, the term "Programmes" refers to funding schemes whose basic parameters are predefined. These parameters may be of a thematic or conceptual/organisational nature.

Some of the SNSF's funding programmes were suggested by researchers or their home institutions, while others were established by political actors.

Number of awards
Not specified

Scholarship benefits
Each SNSF research funding scheme has its own budget.

In so doing, it seeks to implement the principle of fair competition: applications must always be evaluated in a competitive procedure through comparisons with similar applications.

Method of Application
If you are interested in a specific funding scheme, or have chosen the appropriate funding scheme, please refer to the relevant SNSF websites (link found below) or contact the Administrative Offices of the SNSF by phone or email to obtain information on eligibility criteria and deadlines.

Applications must be submitted electronically in all funding schemes via the web platform mySNF. For this you need a user account, which you can request on the website www.mysnf.ch.

After logging in, you can draft a new application in the chosen funding scheme. You will find instructions on how to fill in the relevant online forms in the help texts and downloads.

DEADLINES:
Applications for project grants for basic research on topics freely chosen by the researchers (relevant to divisions I, II and III) can be submitted on 1 April or 1 October. Applications for the Sinergia funding scheme are accepted once per year, on January 15. For all other types of funding, the specific deadlines are listed in the descriptions of each individual funding scheme or given in each call for proposals.

A funding proposal is regarded as submitted in due time if received by the SNSF on the last day of the deadline or on the submission date (until midnight).

If the last day of the deadline or the submission date is a Saturday, a Sunday or a holiday recognised under Swiss federal law, the deadline will be extended, or the submission date postponed until the next working day.

For electronically submitted proposals, the SNSF’s system administrators define the rules regarding deadlines.

PLEASE NOTE:
The funding schemes of the SNSF are geared at different career stages. In addition, some schemes are suited to individuals or small research groups, others to large research groups and consortia.

The goal of the program is twofold: (i) to advance the scholarly careers of women social scientists from the developing world, and (ii) to support research that identifies causes of gender inequity in the developing world and that proposes practical solutions for promoting women’s economic and social empowerment.

The program supports scholars whose work is broad, synthetic, and interdisciplinary and promises to yield significant advances in understanding human culture, behavior, evolution, or critical contemporary issues.

The Hobart Houghton Research Fellowship, named after Professor Desmond Hobart Houghton, promotes work relevant to the economic problems of the Eastern Cape, and which could contribute to the development of the region.

Funding for the establishment of the Fellowship has been provided by Hobart Houghton’s former students and associates and by the Liberty Life Educational Foundation.

Applications are invited for Hobart Houghton Fellowship for 2015.

Eligibility
Prospective Fellows should have had research experience, and hold at least a Masters degree in Economics or Agricultural Economics.

They should have a sound knowledge of economic analysis and be capable of independent, innovative work.

Candidates may either be established scholars (possibly on sabbatical leave) or young, promising economists.

Eligible groups
Citizens of any South Africa

Participating Institutions
Department of Economics and Economic History, Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), Rhodes University, Grahamstown; South Africa

Fields of study
Any course with a “relevance to the Eastern Cape”.

There is a strong tradition of research in the Department of Economics and Economic History. The current research of members of staff and graduate students reflects a wide range of interests including:
  • agriculture and development;
  • the labour market;
  • health economics;
  • international trade and finance;
  • industrialisation;
  • economic development;
  • foreign investment;
  • economic history and
  • Southern African regional economic integration.
The criterion of “relevance to the Eastern Cape” is to be interpreted broadly. It may in some cases involve fieldwork within the Province, as for instance in a study of rural households or unemployment. In other cases, for example industrialisation in the region, the key to understanding might lie largely in developments at national and international levels.

In all cases the aim of the fellowship is to support fundamental research, yielding results which are of more than local or regional interest. The basic requirement is that the research deals with significant issues which are directly or indirectly relevant to the Eastern Cape.

Number of awards
Not specified

Sponsorship duration
The term of the Fellowship is flexible and renewable, and will be decided upon in conjunction with the circumstances of the successful applicant and the nature of the research and progress made.

In the past, the Fellowship has typically been awarded for one year. The current preference in the Department of Economics is to invite applicants for the Fellowship for shorter periods; for example four to six months during the second semester of the academic year.

Scholarship benefits
The Fellow will have an office in the Department. The University provides an excellent internet access.

The amount of the award will be determined on an annual basis. The typical package includes:
  • Return direct economy class airfare from the Fellow's place of residence.
  • University accommodation with electricity and water included.
  • R5000.00 monthly cash stipend to supplement the Fellow's usual source of income, or if you are accompanied by a partner R7500.00 per month cash stipend.
  • If the Fellow accepts the appointment for at least four months and is accompanied by a partner, the partner's return airfare will also be paid.
Limited funds will be available for travel and other research expenses.

The Fellow will be expected to reside in Grahamstown, and will be an honorary member of staff of the University for the duration of the Fellowship.

At the conclusion of the Fellowship, the Fellow will be required to present a full report on the work undertaken.

Rhodes University may reverse the right to publish any work accomplished during the Fellowship. If the Fellow publishes, there must be suitable acknowledgment of both the Fellowship and Rhodes University in any publications.

Professor Desmond Hobart Houghton, who taught Economics at Rhodes and was director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University until 1973, made significant contributions to thinking about the economic problems of South Africa as a whole, but his particular concern, and the major focus of his research, was the problem of poverty and economic development in the Eastern Cape region.

Scholarship Description
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship program ended in 2012-13. Beginning in 2015-14, the Foundation will offer scholarship opportunities through the Rotary Foundation Grants.

The Rotary Global Grants may be used (for Students, Projects and Vocations) to fund and support humanitarian projects, scholarships for academic studies, AND vocational training opportunities in any approved location in the world.

Rotary Foundation Global Grants

Eligibility/ General criteria
The Rotary Foundation District Grants and Rotary Foundation Global Grants support a wide variety of humanitarian and educational activities in local communities and abroad.

Activities under Global grants should align with one or more of Rotary’s areas of focus, must be sustainable and measurable (i.e. ‎How will a scholar’s studies support one or more of the areas of focus?), and should stem from real community needs.

Global grants must be sponsored by at least one Rotary club or district in the country or geographical area where the grant project will take place (primary host sponsor) and one or more outside that country or geographical area(primary international sponsor).

Scholarship applicants must provide proof of university admission to a graduate-level program or letter of invitation to conduct postgraduate-level research when applying for the grant. Admission that requires a guarantee of financial support is acceptable.

Eligible groups
Non-members of Rotary sponsored/nominated by a Rotary Club OR Members of Rotary Clubs in Selected Districts (found in about 70 countries)

Participating Institutions
Rotary Foundation

Fields of study
Global Grants can be used to fund scholarships with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of Rotary’s six areas of focus:
  • Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Maternal and child health
  • Basic education and literacy
  • Economic and community development
Number of awards
Not specified by provider

Sponsorship duration
Academic studies for a term of one to four academic years

Scholarship benefits
The minimum budget for a global grant activity is $30,000. The Foundation’s World Fund provides a minimum of $15,000 and maximum of $200,000.

Clubs and districts contribute District Designated Funds (DDF) and/or cash contributions that the World Fund matches. DDF is matched at 100% and cash is matched at 50%.

The Global grants may be used for:
  1. Humanitarian projects: fund humanitarian projects, provided that they:
    • Support the goals of one or more of the areas of focus
    • Produce measurable outcomes in the benefiting community
    • Achieve results that can be sustained after the grant funds have been expended
    • Have been developed in conjunction with the benefiting community to address their most pressing needs
    • Seek to address community needs in an integrated manner
  2. Scholarships: funding for academic studies provided that they:
    • Fund graduate-level study that relates to one or more of the areas of focus
    • Fund studies for a term of one to four academic years
    • Sponsor the academic studies of an individual traveling from the international sponsor district to the host sponsor district
  3. Vocational training opportunities: support vocational training teams, which are groups of professionals traveling abroad to either learn more about their profession or teach local professionals about a particular field.
Method of Application
The application involves a two-step online process:
  1. Proposal: For club- and district-developed global grants, Rotarians will submit a brief online proposal before submitting a formal application. The proposal should provide an overview of the grant activity’s objectives and demonstrate how the activities fit within an area of focus. This process is designed to increase the acceptance rate of grant applications.
  2. Application: Once a proposal has been accepted, Rotarians will submit an online application that provides the Foundation with more detailed grant activity and budget information. (Depending on the award amount or complexity of the project, the Foundation may request additional details.)
You can contact the Rotary clubs in your respective countries (see contact details below) to inquire on how to be sponsored for the grant. Scholars must submit individual applications to supplement the overall grant application.

It is important to read the Rotary Grants Terms and Conditions and visit the official website for details on how to apply for the global grants.

DEADLINES:
All Rotary Foundation Global Grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

PLEASE NOTE:
