Next Gen Fellowship Program for Sub-Saharan African Countries

Scholarship Description
The program, launched in June 2011, responds to a shortage of experienced faculty in African higher education. The Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program provides fellowships to nurture the intellectual development and increase retention of early-career faculty in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The program assists fellows to develop research opportunities and skills, obtain doctoral degrees, and participate in robust research communities. Toward this end, the project features a thematic focus in order to renew basic research agendas addressing peace, security, and development topics as well as strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity on these issues.

Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, this project offers a replicable model at scale and complements foundation initiatives to develop and strengthen the next generation of African scholars.

The three fellowships are: the doctoral dissertation research fellowship, doctoral dissertation completion fellowship and doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship. Fellowship program also offers two workshops each year for fellow’s Masters research in their research publications.

Eligibility
The following apply to the different fellowships:
  1. The doctoral dissertation research fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.

  2. The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be more eligible for the US$15, 000 dissertation completion fellowship, applicants must be in the final year of writing and have completed at least one dissertation chapter.

  3. The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$3,000 dissertation proposal fellowship, applicants must be admitted to a graduate program but have yet to undertake dissertation research.
Selection Criteria:
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner.

All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.

Scholarship benefits
The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship supports short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.

The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship supports a one-year leave from teaching responsibilities and a stipend up to US$15,000 to permit the completion of a dissertation that advances research on peace, security, and development topics.

The doctoral dissertation research fellowship supports 9-12 months of dissertation research costs of up to US$15,000 on a topic related to peace, security, and development.

African Humanities Program Scholarships for African Students

Scholarship Description
The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to revitalize the humanities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda through fellowship competitions and meetings associated with them.

Through the activities of the African Humanities Program, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) promotes local and international cooperation among humanities scholars at all stages of career, with the aim of developing a self-sustaining continent-wide network of African humanities scholars.

The African Humanities Program is inspired by a commitment to the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, essential to progress and development. The AHP is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions yearly for the AHP.

Eligibility
Fellowship Details:
  • Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
  • Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
  • Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the Ph.D. no more than eight years ago.
  • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.

The AHP organizes meetings in Africa in cooperation with host institutions to publicize the fellowship program and to discuss new trends in humanities research. In the past three years of the program, meetings were held at universities in:
  • Ghana (University of Ghana-Legon), 
  • Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Bayero University Kano, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria),
  • South Africa (University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg, the East London campus of Ft. Hare University, the University of the Western Cape and University of Cape Town in Cape Town),
  • Tanzania (the University of Dar es Salaam), and
  • Uganda (Makerere University in Kampala).
Fields of study
The ACLS defines the humanities as the study of human cultures, languages, and histories through the use of qualitative approaches. Among the disciplines contributing to humanities scholarship are anthropology, archaeology, history, studies of the fine and performing arts, musicology, languages and linguistics, literature studies, religious studies, and philosophy.

Stipends are $9,000 for dissertations and $16,000 for postdoctoral work.

Fellowship awards to promising African scholars are the centerpiece of the African Humanities Program. An initiative to publish the best manuscripts produced under the terms of AHP fellowships is now being established. All fellows will be encouraged to submit their completed manuscripts to the African Humanities Series, which will be a cooperative venture between AHP and a major African university press.

Johnson & Johnson, a reputable transnational health company, offers the Management Development Institute (MDI) Scholarship Program every year.

The Management Development Institute (MDI) for Health Care Organizations is a one-week intensive program designed to enhance the leadership and management skills of program managers and leaders of sub-Saharan African organizations, governmental and non-governmental, that are devoted to delivering health care services to underserved populations.

The program has been specifically designed to assist African ministries of health in implementing their particular national health priorities.

Tuition and Scholarships:
Thirty-six participants will be selected for the program. The cost of the MDI training program is US$ 4,000 per participant. Johnson & Johnson awards scholarships to managers who have the greatest potential to positively impact the quantity and quality of services in their organization.

These scholarships cover the cost of tuition, training materials, accommodation and meals. Travel expenses, if required, will be borne by the participants. Upon completion of this training, candidates will be required to apply the knowledge and skills gained to resolve a management issue or obstacle in their organization.

Eligibility
The Management Development Institute is designed principally for high-level managers of public sector entities in sub-Saharan Africa that are dedicated to the improvement of the health care of underserved populations in their countries.

However, places will also be reserved for leaders of NGO’s and other civil society organizations (faith-based organizations and community-based organizations) that have a similar health-related mission and that have a role in supporting initiatives and implementing health care priorities of the public sector.

MDI is seeking teams or clusters of individuals having related leadership responsibilities for implementing specific national health care programs and priorities in their country or region. In that way, the likelihood of the MDI bringing about significant impact is heightened and the program’s utility to national health systems is enhanced.

Depending on the country and sector, candidates might have the following titles:

The MDI program has been designed by world-class management faculty from the UCLA Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and by leaders of the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). The MDI is delivered by instructors from UCLA , AMREF and by outstanding faculty from other African universities, including the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Fields of study
The Management Development Institute consists of eight modules focusing on specific areas of management directly relevant to national ministries of health and their implementing partners as they evaluate their mission and implement their health plans to achieve their stated priorities. Up until 2010, the MDI was focused solely on HIV/AIDS. In 2011 the program's new focus was expanded to health systems, generally, and now invites participation of those involved in implementing national health priorities in the areas of communicable diseases - of which HIV/AIDS is one - and chronic diseases, as well.

The language of instruction in all programs is English.

The lessons will be practical, and aimed toward successfully meeting the complex challenges faced by eastern, West and southern african health systems.

Through a $13 million partnership with The MasterCard Foundation in Canada, Ashesi University College has been able to expand its existing scholarship programme.

Ashesi will be awarding significant financial support to both qualified Ghanaian and international undergraduate students who need such assistance.

Eligibility
Typically, scholarships are awarded to students from low income and middle income families. Any family that cannot afford the full fees should complete a financial aid application form and turn it in with their admissions application.

The Scholarship Committee will determine the amount of your award on the basis of demonstrated need and the strength of your application.

Admission into Ashesi is a highly selective process which is based in part on the evaluation of information submitted during the application process. For general information on entry requirements for both Ghanaian and International students, please click here.

Selection criteria:
The selection process begins by determining who should be given an offer of admission based on each applicant’s overall profile.

Applicants are considered on the basis of documented financial need and upon a thorough assessment by the Ashesi Scholarship Committee of all information gathered during the admissions process for each candidate.

Please note that half of the scholarships funded by The MasterCard Foundation will be awarded to non-Ghanaians.

There is no limit to the number of students who can apply. Last year, international students made up 10% of the student population. So, Ashesi began an aggressive international recruitment initiative to increase the number of non-Ghanaians attending the university to between 30%-50% by 2020.

Sponsorship duration
As long as you and your family can continue to demonstrate financial need, you can expect that your scholarship award will be renewed annually.

The Scholarship Committee meets annually to assess the financial status of each scholar’s family. You may be asked to submit updated bank statements, pay slips and other supporting documents to verify your family’s financial standing.

Scholarship benefits
This scholarship covers not only the full tuition, but also includes housing in Ashesi’s residence halls, meals on campus, a free laptop, spending money and annual trips home for international students after the second year.

Method of Application
You can download financial aid forms on the official website (link to it is below) or pass by the School's main campus in Berekuso. Submit your financial aid application form with your admissions application. You cannot apply for a scholarship after you have been admitted.

You will need to submit a letter requesting why you need a scholarship. Families will also be required to submit bank statements, pay slips and any other relevant documentation. The more information you can include to support your inability to pay the full fees, the easier it will be to process your request.

Students who receive scholarships typically achieve mostly A’s and B’s on their transcripts and national exam results

The decision to make an offer of admission is done independently of scholarship applications and decisions. The Admissions Office first determines which applicants are most qualified to attend Ashesi. A Scholarship Committee then makes an independent decision regarding scholarship awards.

DEADLINES:
The application deadline dates for Early Admissions is 31st March 2014 AND for the Regular Admissions is 30th June 2014. The Late Admissions application deadline is 25th August, 2014.

International and scholarship applications must be submitted no later than the regular admissions deadline.

Moremi Initiative for Women's Leadership in Africa (Moremi Initiative) is pleased to announce its annual call for applications for the 2014 Moremi Leadership Empowerment and Development (MILEAD) Fellows Program for young African women living in Africa and the Diaspora.

The MILEAD Fellows Program is a long-term leadership development program designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and thrive in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole.

The program targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that help them address issues facing women and girls across communities in Africa. The MILEAD Program equips Fellows with the world class knowledge, skills, values and networks they need to succeed as 21st century women leaders.

Applications are welcome from young African women between 19 – 25 years of age, living in Africa and the Diaspora.

Moremi Initiative invites you to share this application information with emerging African women leaders in your network who have the passion and potential to help transform the continent.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, an applicant must:
  • be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora;
  • agree to participate in ALL required activities related to MILEAD - including a three-week residential Summer Institute in Ghana;
  • commit to a community change project;
  • be between 19 – 25 years of age.
Selection Criteria:
Fellowship will be awarded to outstanding young women with exceptional qualities who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession.

Eligible groups
Citizens of ALL African countries - applications are welcome from ALL young African women living in Africa and the Diaspora, who have the passion and potential to help transform Africa.

Fields of study
Empowerment and leadership development-related studies - designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and succeed in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole.

The 3-week summer institute is an intensive and full-time residential program and all fellows will be required to attend. The rest of the program involves community-based, online and other distance activities.

Every year, the fellowship is awarded to 25 outstanding young women

Please note that this one year program is not a full-time fellowship. Selected candidates may remain full time students or work full time for the program duration, except during the 3–week summer institute.

The Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (Moremi Initiative) is a non-profit organization that operates throughout Africa. To achieve its mission, Moremi Initiative pursues proactive strategies to develop and empower young women and girls to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Established in 2004 as Women’s Initiative for Empowerment and Leadership Development (WIELD) Foundation, Moremi Initiative grew from a Ghana-based leadership development program to a pan-African wide program. Offices are based in Ghana, Nigeria and the United States, operating across Africa.
