Tuition Fee Waivers and Scholarships

Scholarship Description
A limited number of Danish state tuition fee waivers and scholarships are offered to highly talented students at graduate level, who come from countries outside of the EU/EEA and need a residence permit to study at Roskilde University.

Roskilde University
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for a tuition fee waiver and scholarship you must be:
  • A graduate applicant who come from countries outside of the EU/EEA and need a residence permit to study at Roskilde University.
  • A graduate applicant who is required to pay a tuition fee at the university.
  • A graduate applicant holding a bachelor degree from Roskilde University or a graduate applicant from other universities.
Roskilde University gives priority to applicants who have shown an excellent academic performance.

You are not eligible for a tuition fee waiver and scholarship if you are:
  • An exchange student including an Erasmus Mundus student.
  • A student who is entitled to the Danish State Education Grant (SU) or other public support in Denmark. Please note that it is not possible to choose not to receive SU in order to receive a tuition fee waiver.
  • A student who receives a scholarship from their home country.

Sponsorship duration
The tuition fee waiver and scholarship has a maximum length of 22 months for programmes that start in September and a maximum length of 24 months for programmes that start in February.

Tuition fee waiver students must follow the study plan and not be delayed in their studies in order to maintain the tuition waiver.

Scholarship benefits
The value of the award is the program tuition fee waiver and approximately DKK 7,800 per month to cover living expenses in Denmark.

Method of Application
If you wish to be considered for a tuition fee waiver and/or scholarship, you must send a motivational letter and CV) outlining your academic and occupational background.

Applicants for the master programmes who do not hold a bachelor degree from Roskilde University must enclose the above-mentioned documentation with their application for admission. Applications must be submitted before the deadline dates as announced (see DEADLINES below).

Scholarship Description
The global demand for forest and nature resources and the pressures on the natural environment seem to continue to increase. The need to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations has never been greater.

The overall objective of the SUFONAMA Programme is to provide a top-level education programme that qualifies graduates to deal with the huge challenges in Europe’s pursuit of an evermore sustainable management of its natural resources, namely that the management of forest and nature areas must be seen in an integrated landscape context.


Eligibility
Admission Criteria:
  • A good first university degree in Forestry, Biology or related fields such as Environmental Science or Geography, alternatively in Economics, Management or Political Science
  • High proficiency in English
  • Strong personal statement of motivation
  • Good recommendations from two references, of which at least one is academic
  • CV
At the time of application, you must supply proof of your BSc degree as well as the required language test.

The SUFONAMA MSc Course is organised by a Consortium which includes five of the best European universities within the field of forest and nature management:
The five universities all have significant experience in research-based teaching on forest and nature management. The SUFONAMA Programme thus provides you with a single entry point to top-level and up-to-date teaching.

Fields of study
The MSc Course in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management (SUFONAMA) is a 2-year world-class integrated course aimed at qualifying graduates to deal with the enormous challenges in sustainable management of natural resources.

The following degrees are awarded: MSc in Forestry in Copenhagen, MSc in Environmental Forestry (year 1) and MSc in Conservation and Land Management (year 2) in Bangor, MSc in Forestry in Goettingen, MSc in Forestry in Alnarp, and MSc in Forestry and Environmental Sciences in Padova.

Every year approximately 17-20 EU scholarships are available

Scholarship benefits
Category A Scholarships:
  • Category A Scholarships for Third-country nationals: Total 48.000 EUR
    These scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and EEA/EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Furthermore, you must comply with the 12 months rule: You must not be a resident nor have carried out main activity (studies, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.
Category B Scholarships:
  • Category B Scholarships for European nationals: Total 20.000 EUR
    These scholarships can be awarded to any masters students who do not fullfil the criteria A defined above, i.e nationality requirement and 12 months rule.
For both categories please note:
  1. You must study in two of the consortium partner countries.
  2. If you hold an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, these two countries must be different from the country in which you obtained your last university degree.
Method of Application
Admission criteria:
The SUFONAMA Consortium has developed a common set of admission criteria as well as joint application procedures. The SUFONAMA Commission carries out the selection of students, where all partner universities are represented. Please see 'Eligibility' above.

Assessment:
All applications are assessed by at least two senior faculty members, appointed by or part of the SUFONAMA Commission. Decisions on acceptance or not into the SUFONAMA programme is made by the SUFONAMA Commission. Each assessment category (i.e. academic potential, English proficiency, motivation, recommendations and relevant work experience) is allocated a grade between 0 and 5. A final application grade is obtained using a weighting system whereby 60% of the final grade is allocated to academic potential and 10% to each other category.

DEADLINES:
SUFONAMA accepts applications for Category A and Category B scholarships. Application form is usually available in August. The application deadline is 1st December every year.

Scholars (established researchers and teachers) can apply on a continuous basis.

PLEASE NOTE:
Important notice from the European Commission: You can only submit a total of three Erasmus Mundus applications for each application round counting both Master and PhD applications. In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three Erasmus Mundus programmes he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

Erasmus Mundus Programme:
SUFONAMA is part of the Erasmus Mundus Programme initiated by the European Commission. The Erasmus Mundus Programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and promote intercultural understanding. Students without Erasmus Mundus scholarships:
It is possible to be admitted to the SUFONAMA course, even though you are not awarded a scholarship. You will then have to cover EM SUFONAMA participatory costs yourself. If you finance your study yourself, you are allowed to study in the country of your last university degree. The application procedure is the same as described for scholarship students, and admission is based on the same academic criteria.

Students from within the European Union can download the application form here. Deadline for them is 15th August every year.
Students from outside the European Union must contact the Erasmus Mundus secretariat directly for further information on procedures and deadlines.

Scholar scholarships:
The Erasmus Mundus programme supports visiting non-EU scholars staying at one of the SUFONAMA universities for a period of typically three months. However, the duration of stays can vary from one week to three months. The weekly living allowance including travel costs is 1.200 EUR.

Scholars are established researchers and teachers. During the stay scholars will carry out research or teaching activities, for example by contributing to established courses, temporary seminars/workshops or with supervision of students.

Scholarship Description
Novo Nordisk, a world leader in diabetes care and one of the top league pharmaceutical companies in terms of Research & Development (R&D) investments, offer the Novo Nordisk International PhD Fellowships to international researchers.

Fellows advance their scientific career and employment prospects by enrolling in the Novo Nordisk R&D Science, Talent, Attraction and Recruitment (STAR) programme.

Currently, Novo Nordisk co-finances around 80 PhD fellows in the R&D organisation. Some are Industrial PhD fellows who spend about 50% of their time at Novo Nordisk. Others are associated with PhD schools at Danish universities.

Novo Nordisk and the university jointly define the project. Project must be related to Novo Nordisk's R&D areas.

Eligibility
To be considered,
  • You must hold a master’s degree with a grade point average belonging to the top 20% of the grading scale at the university where your Master's degree was awarded. A certificate from the university of this is required, if you graduated from a non-Danish university. Danish graduates must satisfy the marks criteria for the Danish Industrial PhD programme (see below)
  • Fellows under the Danish Industrial PhD programme can be of any nationality. The university must be officially authorised in the country in question to conduct PhD programmes. If the host university is outside Denmark, a Danish university must be attached to the Industrial PhD project as a third party
  • Other PhD fellowships must be linked to a PhD school at a Danish university
  • PhD fellowships at foreign universities may be considered if co-funding from other sources can be provided
For Industrial PhD fellowships the requirements for marks are:
  • Weighted grade point average of 8.2 on the Danish grade scale for bachelor and master’s degrees
  • Grade point of 10 on the Danish grade scale for the master thesis.

Sponsorship duration
Whole duration of programme. An Industrial PhD project is a three-year industrially focused PhD project where the student is hired by a company and enrolled at a university at the same time.

Scholarship benefits
The company receives a monthly wage subsidy of DKK 14,500 while the university has its expenses for supervising etc. covered. The PhD student works full time on the project and divides his or her time equally between the company and the university.

Method of Application
Expression of Interest:
If you want to be considered for a future STAR PhD Fellowship, you may submit an Expression of Interest here. E-mails with Expressions of Interest or applications will not be considered. You will be contacted if a matching opportunity is identified.

Applications can only be submitted by a Novo Nordisk scientist. You cannot apply for a fellowship directly. Based on your Expression of Interest you may be contacted by a Novo Nordisk scientist and asked to prepare a joint application. Your professor or others at your faculty may be of help to contact a relevant Novo Nordisk R&D scientist. Novo Nordisk does not have a repository of PhD projects.

DEADLINES:
There are 3 deadlines for applications per year for Novo Nordisk scientists to submit applications.

The application deadlines are continuously determined and announced at www.erhvervsphd.dk. Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (DASTI) must receive the application no later than 12 noon on the closing date for applications.

Art and Design Competition ($20,000 Prize Money) for Anyone Who Can Design Worldwide

Scholarship Description
LAGI 2014 Copenhagen invites designers from around the world to submit their ideas for what infrastructure art of sustainable cities looks like. The call is to envision public art that generates utility-scale clean energy for the City of Copenhagen.

The Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) brings together artists, architects, scientists, landscape architects, engineers, and others in a first of its kind collaboration. The goal of the LAGI is to see to the design and construction of public art installations that uniquely combine aesthetics with utility-scale clean energy generation. The works will serve to inspire and educate while they provide renewable power to thousands of homes around the world.

The 2014 Land Art Generator Initiative, in partnership with Refshaleøen Holding and other project partners, calls on artists and designers to submit proposals for a pragmatic art installation for the design site at Refshaleøen, located across the water from the iconic Little Mermaid Statue.

A qualified entry must fulfill the following requirements and be developed to a concept design level of detail.

Land Art Generator Initiative Design Competition

Eligibility
The competition is free and open to everyone. LAGI encourages designers, artists, engineers, architects, landscape architects, university students, urban planners, scientists, and anyone to enter who believes that the world can be powered beautifully and sustainably.

There are no restrictions on team size and/or makeup. The competition is open to everyone, but is in particular aimed at artists, urban planners, architects, landscape architects, and engineers. It is recommended (but not mandatory) that the team be comprised of interdisciplinary members so as to arrive at the most well-conceived result but we also recognize that great ideas can spring from individual efforts as well.

As an international design competition, the Competition is open worldwide to professionals, any member of the public, and to students. An Entrant may either make a Submission individually or as a team (“Entrant”). Each team shall identify one team member as its Point of Contact (“Point of Contact”) during the upload process.

The following are excluded from participation in the competition:
  • All persons or businesses who are or were involved in the organization of the competition or have contributed significantly to formulating the competition design guidelines.
  • Representatives or employees of the competition promoter.
  • Employees with, partners of or employees of any member of the jury or adviser to the jury.
  • Persons who are close relatives of or have a close familial relationship with any member of the jury or adviser to the jury.
  • Enterprises that are wholly or partly owned by persons who are close relatives of or have a close familial relationship with a member of the jury or adviser to the jury.
  • Any employee, volunteer, or board member of Society for Cultural Exchange or the Land Art Generator Initiative.

Fields of study
A qualified entry to the LAGI 2014 design competition must fulfill the following criteria:
  • Consist of a three dimensional sculptural form that has the ability to stimulate and challenge the mind of visitors to the site.
  • Capture energy from nature, convert it into electricity, and have the ability to store, and/or transform and transmit the electrical power to a grid connection point to be designed by others.
  • Not create greenhouse gas emissions and not pollute its surroundings. The work must not impact the natural surroundings negatively.
  • Be pragmatic and constructible and employ technology that can be scalable and tested.
  • Be well informed by a thorough understanding of the history, geography, details of the design site, and the broader contexts of Refshaleøen, Copenhagen, and Denmark;
  • Be safe to people who would view it. Consideration must be made for viewing platform areas and boundaries between public and restricted areas;
  • Be designed specifically to the constraints of the design site at Refshaleøen as shown in the Location Plan (available for download);
  • Designs must not exceed 125 meters in height;
  • Entries must be in English and metric scale.

There will be two prize winners - the FIRST place and the SECOND place winners

Scholarship benefits
PRIZES include:

First Place:
$15,000 (USD). Two members of the first place winning team will be flown to Copenhagen for the award ceremony and exhibition opening. Accommodations and airfare will be provided, but Visas and other travel requirements are the responsibility of the team members.

Second Place:
$5,000 (USD)

PLEASE NOTE:
Land Art Generator Initiative design competition ("Competition") is a project of Society for Cultural Exchange ("SCE") and is administered solely by SCE. The award money is a cash payment from SCE to the winning designer and is not related to costs of detailed design or construction of the work. There is no guarantee of any of the submitted designs being constructed.

All Submissions shall be vetted for eligibility and strict adherence with all Competition Rules and Criteria as defined herein or in any associated Competition Guidelines (or similar).

Jury review shall be preceded by a shortlisting process in coordination with Partners and informed by community events and public feedback. The shortlisting process shall proceed at the discretion of SCE. Entrants will not be notified of their status with regard to shortlisting.

Jurors shall have no access to the identity of the Entrant but shall refer to the Submissions by their unique 8-digit identification code.

The Jury shall identify through their deliberation a First and a Second place winner. First Place will receive $15,000USD in award money. Second Place will receive $5,000USD in award money. Accordingly, SCE will notify the First Place, Second Place, and Shortlisted entries (“Winners”). SCE reserves the right to change any rubric related to or in identifying any Winner.
