Georgetown University U.S.A Fellowships for Africans Committed to Women's Rights

LAWA Fellowship Program

Course(s) Offered: Women's human rights
Course Level: Graduate (masters, training, fellowships)
Provider: Georgetown University Law Center
Country to Study in: USA

Scholarship Description
The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in order to train women's human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers.

Throughout their time in Washington, D.C., the LAWA Fellows also participate in bi-weekly seminars and professional development training with their American counterparts in the Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program, where they discuss key women's rights issues with prominent government and public interest leaders.

They attend related events, such as Supreme Court and Congressional Briefings on significant women's rights issues. The relationships that the LAWA attorneys build with their American contacts and government leaders, together with their legal training and enhanced computer research and technology skills, provide the ability to draw upon vastly expanded legal networks and resources upon their return to Africa.

Eligibility
Qualification requirements include:
  • Must be a women’s human rights lawyer from Africa. Men who are committed to women’s human rights are encouraged to apply.
  • As a requirement of participation in the LAWA Program, all applicants must commit to return home to their own countries upon completion of the Fellowship, and to use their best professional efforts to advance women’s human rights in their counties throughout their careers.
  • Candidates who are awarded a LAWA Fellowship must be prepared to cover the costs of all additional expenses (such as visas, travel, housing, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, books, fees, etc.), and must be able to demonstrate to the U.S. Embassy for visa purposes that they have the full amount of funds available to cover these expenses (totaling over U.S. $26,690) at the time of their visa application.
Eligible countries
Any country in Africa.

Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future.

Participating Institution(s)
Georgetown University Law Center, Washington DC; USA

Fields of study
The LAWA Program starts in July, when the Fellows attend the Georgetown Law Center's Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course.

From August through May, the LAWA Fellows earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at Georgetown with an emphasis on international women's human rights and complete a major graduate research on a significant women's rights issue in their home countries.

After graduation, the LAWA Fellows then have an opportunity to engage in challenging work assignments for three months (June through August) at various public interest organizations to learn about different advocacy strategies to advance women's human rights, before returning home to continue advancing women's human rights in their own countries.

Sponsorship duration
The entire LAWA Fellowship Program is approximately 14 months long (from July of the first year through August of the following year), after which the LAWA Fellows return home to continue advocating for women's rights in their own countries.

Number of Awards
Not specified. Over 80 women's human rights advocates have participated in the past.

Scholarship benefits
The LAWA Program helps defray the costs for women's rights attorneys from Africa who would not otherwise be able to afford a Master of Laws degree focusing on international women's human rights and the additional leadership training.

The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $46,865 benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional development training.

Candidates who are admitted to the LAWA Program must be prepared to cover the costs of all additional expenses (such as their visas, travel, housing, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, books, etc.), and must be able to demonstrate to the U.S. Embassy for visa purposes that they have the funds available to cover those expenses (approximately $28,000).

Due to the intensity of the LAWA Program and academic studies, LAWA Fellows are not permitted to work throughout the academic portion of the program. They must also affirm that they will return home after the LAWA Fellowship and continue to promote women's human rights in their countries throughout their careers.

Method of Application
To apply for a Fellowship position, please submit a completed LAWA application form to wlppfp@law.georgetown.edu before the indicated deadline date below. Ensure that all required documentation (Current Resume, 2 Letters of Recommendation, Official Law School Transcript) are also scanned and submitted in time.

Please review the LAWA Program FAQs for additional information regarding the application process and requirements.

It is important to visit the official website (link to it is below) for complete information on how to apply for this fellowship position.

DEADLINES:
The application for the 2015-2016 Fellowship Year will be available on October 1, 2014, and due on January 9, 2015.

Skills You Can Leverage For a Successful Career in Teaching

Written by a Guest Contributor

Teaching is one of the oldest and definitely a most respected profession. If not for teachers, there would have been little to no progress and mankind would have been still grappling with simple problems rather than thinking about reaching out to the space. If you are looking for a career as teacher, here are some skills that you should know about.

Your most vivid memories of childhood would relate to your school in some way or the other. Right from the first standard in school to postgraduate degree in college, you will notice that teachers play a very important role in shaping and making you what you are today.

Who thinks at that point in time to grow up and make a difference to others' lives in a way similar to how your teachers are making to your life? Yet many of us grow up and come to be respected as a teacher. Those who already belong to this profession know the immense value that they bring to the society with their benevolent act. If you also want to experience the same pride, develop the skills below and hone them as much as possible.

1). Subject Matter Expertise
The most essential skills of all without which your selection for teaching jobs might not be even possible is expertise in your particular subject. Until or unless you are well versed with your subject you cannot expect to do justice with your role as a mentor and tutor to students. Neither would you have confidence in your abilities to make it big at any level.

2). Collaboration
21st century teachers should be able to collaborate with students on various Web 2.0 tools and technologies. Some of the examples include MySpace, Second Life and Wikispaces. These tools offer an online collaborative learning environment to the participants. In addition, your collaborative practices should be able to involve students of all levels of intelligence so that no one feels left out in the class.

3). Communication
Without any doubts, communication is one of the most important skills you need to have for running a successful teaching career. You might be one of the most knowledgeable persons around but until or unless you are able to communicate it in clear words to students, it’s of little use. Besides, good communication also involves understanding the problems and concerns of students and solving them as and when required.

4). Creativity
A teacher should have strong imagination and creativity. They need to imagine the best possible solution of a problem and also come up with new and innovative pedagogy with the changing time. Every student has his own needs and pace of learning and as a teacher it is his responsibility to come up with solutions that are creative enough to include all. The teacher needs to foresee the potential of emerging technologies, find different areas of curriculum and make links that enhance learning experience of students.

5). Quick learner
A teacher has to be constant on the heels of the latest technology. Learning is a continuous process and more than anyone; professionals searching for teaching jobs must inculcate this fact in their life. The current crop of teachers has at their disposal vast pool of knowledge in the form of the web. Change is the only constant and with changing times it is expected that a teacher’s skill and needs should also improve.

Things You Should Know About Career in Retail Management

Written by a Guest Contributor

Retail industry is one of the most rapidly changing industries of the world, contributing to the economic growth of one and many. Retailing is an important part of the business industry which has selling products and services to consumers at its core. If you are on your path to become a retail store manager, here are some things you ought to know.

The origin of the word retail is French, derived from retailer that means “to cut a piece off” or “to break bulk”. In simple words, retailing refers to the process of timely delivery of goods as and when demanded by the consumers at affordable prices. It is a people-oriented industry which is buzzing with opening of sprawling shopping malls across the different parts of the country.

The first wave of retail revolution came in the late 80s after which the Indian retail sector grew to become the fifth most attractive emerging retail market in the world. Currently, the sector contributes to more than 10 percent of the total gross domestic product and provides employment to eight percent population. In the next five years it is expected that the industry will grow at a rate of 30 percent.

With such a tremendous growth, retail management has become a very lucrative career option. Many students are now opting for specialized retail management courses.

Retail industry is one of the most rapidly changing industries of the world, contributing to the economic growth of one and many. The fast pace of expansion has thrown open a wide gap between the demand and supply of skilled professionals in this sector. The resulting effect is that retail management and store management jobs are now one of the most highly paid in the industry. Besides, even if you are not an expert, there are plenty of entry level opportunities.

Retail is an industry looking for people at all levels, from the school pass out with basic skills to the highly qualified professionals backed with years of experience. The top popular jobs in retail sector include:
  • Store manager/Floor Manager: A store manager is involved in the tasks of maintaining the store’s stock, and ensuring its efficient functioning. He is the person to whom all the other employees of the store report.
  • Retail buyer & Merchandisers: These individuals are responsible for selection and buying of goods for the retail shop. It is upon their selection that the success and failure of the retail store rests. Therefore, they should have an intuitive power along with good analytical skills which helps in determining the needs and wants of customers, and should be aware of the trends in the consumer goods category.
In addition to these two professions, the retail sector has many other jobs such as logistics and warehouse manager, retail communication manager, retail marketing executive and back-end operation manager.

Education and eligibility

Owing to the YoY augmentation of the retail industry, a number of colleges and higher educational institutions have started specialized courses in store management and retail management amongst others.

Candidates have the option to take up either a degree course or a diploma course in retail management. Degree course include MBA, while the post graduate diploma in retail management is also an equivalent course.

These courses train students on various aspects of retailing such as marketing strategies, accounting, ethics and laws, customer relation, merchandising, retail communication and retail buying. Students pursuing these courses also get information on subordinate fields such as supply chain management and merchandising, which go hand in hand with retailing.

There are a number of good institutes in the country that offer these courses. While some of these institutions are solely dedicated to this cause, there are others that offer it as a specialization along with other courses.

The Retail Association of India, RAI, is an independent body, comprising all the major retailers as its members. RAI, in association with the Indira Gandhi National Open University, IGNOU, offers a certificate and diploma program in retailing.

However, there are some important things that one should be careful about while thinking about a career in retail management.
  • Right personality: Being a retail manager is not everyone’s cup of tea. Being able to motivate your team members to give in their hundred percent every day even when the economics turn adverse is not an easy task. One has to be patient, cheerful, a good communicator, good listener, strong negotiator and a thorough professional.
  • Pick your specialty: Retail management as a whole is a vast field. As you move in your career, there will be many opportunities for you to specialize in such as buying, merchandising, personnel, customer service, operations and training. Find what excites you most and get on with it.
  • Requires travelling: To move up the ladders of career in retail, more often than not you will be asked to move from one store to another. Besides, a promotion most probably means moving from a smaller store at a smaller city to a larger store in a bigger city. Thus, moving from a place to other is a necessity.
