Scholarship Description
Every year the Google RISE Team is inspired by the work you do to impact students through creative and engaging STEM initiatives.

Google is excited to bring together another amazing group of organizations for the 2015 Awards.

Google RISE - Roots in Science and Engineering - Awards are designed to promote and support Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Computer Science (CS) education initiatives. Google grants awards to organizations working with K-12 (primary & secondary schools) and university students to provide enrichment programs in these fields.

Google believes that technology will continue to play an important role in shaping our future, and the youth of today will help innovate and drive these technologies for years to come.

Google hopes that all students will one day have the chance to reach their potential and achieve great things in science. To that end, we aspire to help students take one step closer to achieving their potential by offering growth and development opportunities through the Google RISE Awards.

Eligibility
Organizations from around the globe who are working to promote and support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as Computer Science (CS) education initiatives at the K-12 / Pre-University and University (US only) levels with an emphasis on increasing engagement of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, girls, and under-represented minorities are eligible for consideration.

Ideal K-12 / Pre-University & university STEM programs or projects should:
  • Inspire excitement in STEM and CS
  • Improve, advance and enrich students’ understanding of STEM and/or CS education
  • Include hands-on learning activities in STEM and/or CS education
Program Guidelines:
  • Google RISE Awards are specifically geared towards STEM and CS educational and outreach programs around the world
  • Applications are encouraged from organizations and educational institutions regardless of the socio-economic status, race, or gender of the students they serve
  • Please note that the RISE team is not able to provide one on one consultations during the review process (both prior to applying and after applications have been submitted) to ensure no bias is given to specific organizations
Selection Criteria:
A cross-functional team of Google volunteers will evaluate all applications based on the following criteria:
  • Track record of success (for established organizations)
  • Sustainability of project beyond Google funding period
  • Potential for dissemination and sharing of best practice (scalability)

Award amounts range from $15,000 – $50,000 USD (was $5,000 -$25,000 USD in the 2012 edition)

Method of Application
All applicants are required to fill out a general application form and submit a detailed proposal including organization and program information as well as a detailed program budget. This application process is subject to change.

DEADLINES:
The application portal for 2015 RISE funding will be open August 18th through September 30th, 2014.

PLEASE NOTE:
Be sure to read through the guidelines on the Google RISE Award pages before applying.

RISE Award recipients will be notified of their grant award in December 2014.

In recent years, Africa has experienced an economic and political resurgence. There is mounting evidence of political stability and economic growth. New industries - manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, and agriculture - are flourishing.

The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program provides disadvantaged young people with the education and skills needed to succeed in the global economy.

The Program is building a global network of education institutions and non-profit organizations committed to its vision to educate young people in Africa who will contribute to the prosperity of the continent. This growing network will document and share best practices in real-time, as Scholars transition to university and the workforce.

MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program for Africans
Eligibility
The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars are economically disadvantaged young people showing academic promise and achievement. They are ready to learn and to make a difference in their communities, their countries, and their continent.

Partner institutions will identify and select young men and women from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated the following attributes:
  • Academic Talent: Scholars value learning and have the drive to complete their education.
  • Commitment to Giving Back: Scholars will apply what they learn to improve their communities.
  • Potential to Lead: Graduates will be prepared and empowered to lead Africa into the future.
Eligible groups
Talented yet economically marginalized young people of African nationality.

The Foundation has committed $500 million over 10 years to an expanding network of education institutions and non-profit organizations that believe education is a catalyst for social and economic progress.

These partners are educating and providing holistic support to deserving young people who are committed to giving back. Students enrolled in the Scholars Program receive comprehensive scholarships, mentoring, leadership development, and life skills support as they transition to secondary school, university or the workforce.

  4. OANDO Nigeria Scholarships for Secondary School Students
    Oando Marketing Limited has been providing scholarships for children as part of our Secondary School Children’s Scholarship Project, which was initiated in 2005. The project provides secondary school educational scholarships to 12 children in the Bundu and Onne communities collectively.
    The scholarship, which is awarded annually, is given to indigent students of the communities who are identified and recommended by the communities based on their financial and other special needs. The aim of the scholarship award programme is to shoulder the financial burden of the children’s education for an initial five-year period.

    Gaslink Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Oando Gas and Power initiated its Back-To-School scholarship programme for 100 primary and secondary children in Ikeja and the Greater Lagos area. The scholarships are awarded to children who had dropped out of school or who had never had the opportunity of formal basic education due to financial constraints.

  5. Merry Hearts Scholarship for Nigerian pre-university students
    The Merry Hearts Scholarship Fund, an initiative of The Merry Hearts Foundation (MHF) Inc., reaches out to underprivileged pre-university youths in impoverished regions of the world.
