Scholarship Description
The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is a six-week course organized annually by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.
It is organized under the Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, which is one of the cornerstones of the United Nation’s efforts to promote the rule of law.
The International Law Fellowship Programme is designed to enable qualified persons, in particular, mid-level government legal officers and young teachers of international law from developing countries, and countries with emerging economies, to deepen their knowledge of international law.
Eligibility
To qualify, candidates should be between 24 and 45 years of age at the beginning of the Fellowship Programme.
They must have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law. The selected participants are required to submit a medical certificate of good health and to certify that they are able to attend the entire course period.
The Fellowship Programme is conducted in either English or French, depending on the year. Fluency in spoken and written language for that year is required. The 2014 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in French.
Selection criteria:
Fellows are selected on the basis of their qualifications, the needs of their respective countries and the potential benefits they may derive from the fellowship in their professional life.
Preference will be given to candidates from countries whose nationals have not been awarded a fellowship in the immediately preceding years and to candidates from least developed countries.

Fields of study
Fellows attend courses in public international law and participate in lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.
The lectures and seminars, given by eminent scholars and practitioners in international law from different regions and legal systems, are conducted in either English or French.
The 2013 Programme was conducted in English. The 2014 Fellowship Programme will be held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 30 June to 8 August 2014. It will be conducted in French.

Scholarship benefits
The Fellowship Programme will cover the fellowship recipient’s travel costs in economy class, medical insurance, the training material and the registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law.
In accordance with policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships, participants will receive a stipend to cover their living expenses. Accommodation will also be provided by the Fellowship Programme.
Additional places will be made available for self-funded participants from developed countries and employees of international organizations who will have to bear all costs associated with their participation (travel, accommodation, living expenses, registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law).

DEADLINE:
The application deadline is usually 31st January every year. Applications received after this date will not usually be considered.
For the 2014 fellowship, the deadline has since been announced, and the deadline for applications now extended until 1 December 2013.

When selecting participants, the UN Office of Legal Affairs/UNITAR joint selection board will give due consideration to the candidates' qualifications, to the scope of their professional duties and to adequate geographical and gender distribution of the fellowships.
The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is conducted under the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, established by General Assembly resolution 2099 (XX) of 20 December 1965 and most recently mandated by General Assembly resolution 67/91 of 14 December 2012.
